My DSL modem died on Wednesday morning, so I've been computerless 'til now. I wasn't sure I'd survive!

Somewhere still packed I have a couple of books, one my mothers the other my grandmothers. They are wartime and prewar knitting books. One has "Attractive alterations" that can be made to sweaters and cardigans that have worn areas. How to make cushion covers from old pullovers. The piece More...

Talking about the "good old days", I remember a tinker who came around in a horse-drawn wagon. In the summer, the same gentleman would offer farm-fresh produce. Of course, we grew a lot of our own veggies. We also had raspberry bushes, a rhubarb patch and lots of apple trees.

Knitted underware & nightgowns??? Guess they didn't have the heating systems we have now!

I also remember one Christmas during WWII when I got a doll buggy as a gift. It was made of heavy-duty cardboard since metal was not available for consumer goods. I took it out in the snow, and it disintegrated!

Jane, Debby still has the rhubarb patch & veggie garden! And she makes a delicious rhubarb pie!

When I was growing up, we lived in an old farmhouse that had a potbelly stove in the kitchen that provided heat for the entire house. My father would get up early in the morning, haul coal up from the basement and get the fire going before the rest of us would venture out of bed. And it got cold in northern Illinois in the winter!!!

Shiela - I know all about Debbie's rhubarb! She's been promising me some for ages!!! Sure wish we could grow it down here!

It is knitted in an extremely fine yard Shiela. The bra part of the nightie and the bra itself is knitted in a spiral on 3/4 needles. Not a lot of support, I think.

Shiela - underware works. (as in software)

Same here, Jane. Only ours was oil. Mom finally got a hot water floor heating system (because there are no vents) put in about 5 years ago.

Our underwear had underware then.

GMo - Yes we did! We also had linoleum floor covering on our bedroom floors, so the floor was icy cold when we got out of bed! I also remember having a down comforter that was covered in satin, and the danged thing kept sliding off the bed! Now I must run.......
11/Apr/09 1:31 AM

We called that satin slidy thing an eiderdown because the feather stuffing came from the eider duck. The lino floors went right through and on rainy days during the school vacation mum would rub polish into it then tie rags over our feet and we played 'ice skating' until the floors shone.

I still consider myself a girl, and I love to crochet. I am currently making a baby blanket for my bundle of joy. I also just taught myself how to thread crochet. I have made a crossed shaped book mark for a niece's confirmation. I know how to knit. But I am just not a knitter. When my two girls are a little older, I have every intention of teaching them these skills.

Well done Jill I'm glad to hear it. I see less and less hand knitted evidence around. Like you I prefer to crochet it grows faster and there are lesstitches you can drop!

My oldest daughter likes to knit and crochet. She makes a lot of gifts and has had some items for sale in local shops.

I've been catching up from being off the net. Fiona tells me I was the only one to get the puzzle about two whole numbers without zeroes that multiply together to make 1,000,000,000. Jill, appy and the other math people missed seeing it posted?

I did let the 1,000,000,000 puzzle tickle my brain for a minute or so then I realized the obvious path to the answer. Apparently I forgot to submit my solution. Prime factorizaton is key.

GannieMo, when I was little, someone gave us 4 little chicks which grew to be 2 Plymouth Rock hens and 2 Rhode Island Red roosters. When they grew too big to be kept in the city we took them to my uncle who had a farm in Fresno. Years later he accidently let it drop that they tried cooking them. As I cried in horror, "Uncle!", he kept muttering about what tough old birds they became!

 |  |

Oh Shosho I know just what you mean. I couldn't eat chicken for ages.
11/Apr/09 3:08 AM
 |  |

One of the chicks was especially small and was picked on. I protected her and named her Chiquita. She broke my heart one day when "she" crowed under my bedroom window. I ran out, grabbed "her" and placed "her" firmly on a nest I made for "her", yelling, "Shut up and lay an egg!"

When it's high quality, it's not a matter of how you get through them, it's whether there's enough of them!

Too much Chocolate! Is there such a thing.

We went Easter goodie shopping, my plan was to have candliless baskets. Almost made it out the door without Easter candy and hubby plopped a chocolate bunny in the basket. Darn man. Doesn't he know that all the aunts, uncles and grandparents are going to have tons of candy?

What an awesome day Lynne and I had yesterday, starting with a train ride to Epping. We spent a couple of hours in a wild animal park where we were allowed to pose petting a Koala Bear, and were able to feed Kangaroos and get right up next to a Wombat. Then we went to June's BBQ and had a More...

Hello Everyone!
My mom took the kids and me to 'Monsters vs Aliens' today. 2 thumbs up! The kids can't wait for 'Up' and 'Night at the Museum 2'
Mo -- my whole family can crochet (my daughter and I don't really like to, though) and we also make easy homemade quilts.
Keith--So glad you are having a good time, will wait patiently for pics!

Good Morning all!

I looked at the picture just after taking my last mouthful of coffee ... now I want to go back for seconds. Is this a handcart? The photo needs somethings for scale! 'Zizzer' is the right word for those electric grinders ... but we're currently using a coffee maker with pods. Can never beat the cafe variety though.
