G'day mates,here's today's daffynition:
INDEPENDENT: How we want our children to be as long as they do everything we say.

..And here's today's factoid:
Termites can't hear.

Beautiful heron!!! We have plenty of them here because I stock the ponds with small fish and bullfrog tadpoles for them to eat.

Good Maen, good people. We get to do roofing today, as we do many Saturdays, but this time it's for ourselves. A treetop fell on our roof and rolled off in a spring storm. We didn't notice because of the drought. It began to rain again a few weeks ago and we had an insurance adjuster out. He More...

Actually it's quite easy, Heidi. You sneak up behind a termite and clap your hands. If it doesn't jump, it must be deaf.

I am also the go-fer (one trip for plywood so far) and the lunch cook. BBQ pork, beans and fruit I think. Oh, and I need to run to the store for chips and lemonade. If they're still here later this afternoon, it will be a pot of chili. Better get both potato and corn chips while I'm at it.

Hmmm, Queen Anne, isn't around is she? Like the squire who stole the tart from the Red Queen, I shall take her number 13!

Good morning, all.

Plum, I remember many year ago helping my husband put the roof on our house. It was hard work, but in the evening it was lovely sitting up on the ridge, watching the sun go down and admiring our handiwork. I could never do it again, however! Sounds like a busy day. Good luck!

It was my understanding that insects and spiders don't 'hear' per se. They have no hearing organs. Instead they sense vibrations through their body and have various innate responses to those vibrations. Some insects have very acute behavior patterns in response to vibrations, chiefly mate More...

Thanks, Linda. I won't have to be on the roof today. The girls and I are serving as ground crew. Burl has a couple of men helping him.

Oy vey. I remember when my hubby would get our boys to help in doing big jobs. I would try to join in with the heavy stuff, only to be gently steered away by them and asked to get iced drinks. Hmmm ya think they're trying to tell me something? Not something chauvinistic! Can't stand that!

Be careful, Plum.
My sister slid off a roof helping her husband roof his sister's house. Cracked a few vertebra.

2) Learn to say 'NO'.

Plum - the support team is essential, and the guys will appreciate the food and drinks you fix and the errands you run. Actually, I sometimes think that being the go-fer is the hardest job of all!

We are trying to grow new grass near our new landscaping wall we put in this spring. We've put it off all summer because it's been too hot and too dry. The grass is just peeking up and we have to go away for a day to babysit grand-twins. Hope it rains while we are gone, because we'd hate that the new little blades would dry out.

Hope Gwen doesn't pull the 911 trick with us that she did with her other grandmother! Don't relish trying to explain to the police that it was a 15-month old who called and that nothing is wrong!

Hi Shosho,

As chauvinism means roughly 'a misguided belief that ones country or gender is more important than the others', why is a female's Retail Therapy viewed by men as something women do, but men's Retail Therapy is viewed by women as something like 'Unnessary and Wildly Extravagant'?

My roofing experience, was to step out every once in a while to see if my guys were still alive, take a picture or two and return to my hide-away. My dear, had make shift scaffolding, on top of make shift scaffolding and still roped climbed, carrying sheets of tin. I kept checking the life insurance coverage.

And for today.....
