But an underlying question is the quality of a college degree (or a college education) today compared to 50 years ago. It is possible to graduate and still be far less competent, literate or learned than a high school graduate would have been 50 years ago, when finishing high school was just More...

A college education is now required for many jobs that a college education is really not necessary for. Many companies are requiring the college education because it proves a certain amount of scholarship and character (i.e, being both a self starter and a completer) that one can now get a high More...

It gets worse...at most universities, it is now possible to get a degree in American history without ever taking a course on the Revolution, the acceptance of the Constitution, the Civil War, or the Depression. Not a single book on the Industrial Revolution or World War II.

You can imagine what courses they do take...

Good afternoon to all! Vici, I'm sure Keith would enjoy sitting with Jeremiah. He's a very thin bullfrog, and he's a good friend of mine. To top it off, he always has some very fine wine!

Kathy - I'm sorry. I have a headache and am hurrying through stuff to get ready for fair. Didn't even get to post about any puzzles yesterday (did I do any?). I thought I was on track as I read your puzzle, but the last line didn't work, so I'm going to slide on this one. Glad someone got it right, that's all that counts.

The talk of university in the 60's... My father passed on when I was 15 and my mother was sole bread winner. I went to university by working part-time, summer jobs ans student loans that took me six years to pay off after I entered the work force full time. Anyone and everyone had the opportunity to go to college or university if they wanted to by just wanting it badly enough and working for it.

Julius Caesar walked into a bar and sat down on a bar stoll. When bartender came over, he said to him, "I'd like a martinus."
The bartender, a little confused, said, "Don't you mean a martini?"
Caesar replied, "If I wanted a double, I would have asked for it."

Greg – I’m so with you on your statement about anyone and everyone having the opportunity to go to college if they want it badly enough. What was true in the ‘60s is true today (IMO). I agree Linda, and Ian, sure, anyone can earn a degree in certain programs just by coasting through and taking "bird" courses, but you only get something out of an education based on what you put into that education to start with. Those people with that "degree" in American history will have little to offer as teachers, politicians, etc. That's sad.

Greg – your comment on what one gets out of an education is based on what one puts into it is true of everything in life. Some people choose to skate through and others look for (and are willing to work for) a more meaningful experience. I guess it boils down to what a person wants in life (or More...

Positive--negative, optimist--pessimist, it is so true that you see what you're looking for. If you want to focus on those that skate by and make a mockery of whatever they're a part of, you can make any program look bad. If you want to focus on those that take it seriously and put in the effort to get everything they can out of a program, then that program looks good.

In 1963, my husband received a full fellowship for graduate school at the University of Wisconsin (Madison). He earned 2 masters (one in science and the other in business administration) in 2 years. When he came to Wisconsin, he didn't speak a word of English but managed to ace all his courses. He claims our college-level courses back then were the equivalent of high school courses in Chile.

Kathy,

Before you get bombarded with complaints about your instructions not working, tell people that they have to use the numeric keypad, not the row of numbers at the top of the keyboard. And on a laptop, they have to hold down "Function" to activate that built-in keyboard.
