Sweet baby picture.
Just hot here. Only 99F on front porch today vs. 105 that it has been the past week, but possibly more humid. The AC is definitely keeping up better today. The high pressure that causes the heat is supposed to keep the hurricanes away. So guess we'll take the heat over a More...

Jamie is now waiting for his second child, due in Dec a day after his wife's birthday. As June said, Jasmine is now older. Three, to be precise. By the way, June, I have a lovely pic of you with Laura taking a photo of me. Will post it on my page.

No Margo, but thank you for asking. It is only the 84th Anniversary, hyped up a bit by Channel 7. I usually receive invitations to the annual RAAF Anniversary Cocktail Party and to the milestone events on the Base - perhaps the 85th?

Ian, there are a lot of myths about what is required to form a common law marriage. Here is a website listing the few states that recognize common law marriage and the requirements of each.

Great site, MizT. But I think I'd still like to talk to a lawyer.

To our other members: How is it in England, France, and Oz?

Ian, you can check the following website regarding what happens to property in the breakdown of a defacto relationship in Oz.

Thanks for the reference, Victoria. It sounds like it is a very subjective decision made by a judge, not something governed by a strict set of clear rules.

Ian, have a look at this for a general explanation of what happens in France. In Scotland you were just called a bidie-in, meaning that you stayed with someone but weren't married to them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacte_civil_de_solidarit%C3%A9

From what you discuss, it seems that divorce is becoming so common-place that the process of settlement is increasingly governed by efficient, well-researched rules of thumb. Perhaps society is moving away from the traditional institution of marriage altogether (in the long run anyway), but it has More...

I wonder if the problem of weakening marriage is down to early (pre-marital) promiscuous experimentation that erodes the capacity to subsequently live with only one partner.
30/Jun/09 5:15 PM
 |  |

And, by the way, I do not think that such early experimentation is at all 'natural'. For the most part young people are pushed into it by media and social pressures that have established artificial mores that are totally 'unnatural'.

Yes Rayray, but thank (whoever you choose to worship) that we now have the ability to remove ourselves from an unsatisfactory relationship. Personally I take responsibility for my own actions.
30/Jun/09 5:47 PM
 |  |

Broni, I hope you haven't got me wrong by reading extra 'judgement' into what I say. I agree with you. What I was trying to do was to find the social changes that have, commonly, led to the 'unsatisfactory' nature of relationships - of which you speak. I wasn't moralising at all.
30/Jun/09 6:17 PM
 |  |

The discussion appears to have stuck into a long pause. Too heavy!? I have been thinking as to whether or not I 'take responsibility' for my own lack of relationship - and concluide that I don't and shouldn't. The main reason is outside social destruction.
30/Jun/09 6:51 PM
 |  |

Rayray, you read too much into things I was actually agreeing with you silly!
30/Jun/09 7:04 PM
 |  |

Now I will have to google all else you said as I did not understand it or was it a typo????
30/Jun/09 7:05 PM

Ian, here in the UK there is actually no such thing as a common-law wife or husband recognised by law, and there hasn't been since the 1700's. In order to protect themselves partners have to make a will, and reach agreements with each other in the form of legal documents to ensure that each has a More...
