The 2011 float design for La Cañada Flintridge (the one I've been involved with for 30+ years) is in my gallery with a link to facebook on what is happening down there this year during Decorating Week.

You aren't doing the float this year, Eve? How many did you work on?

Good Maen. There was an earthquake an hour ago in central Indiana. This is rare for the midwest. Did anyone besides me feel it?

The temp. today is to be near 70º, by Saturday the high will be in the 30's. No wonder I get confused.

My first thougt was the name should have been "Shovel Ready" so they could get some money for their project.

There is irony in that right now it is La Cañada Flintridge where the evacuations have been occuring due to the flooding and mud slides in So. Cal. and a lot of More...

Shiela - I stayed up here this year - so am keeping up with the happening on the float via the photos Helaine takes. I thought she was going to be in Seattle this year - but got back in time (from Hanukkah) to do her annual photography of the comings and goings at float site.

The float looks fantastic, Eve! I bet you miss being involved in making it.

Sauerkraut Balls have been added to the recipes. Once you read it you will see why it is good to have a friend to work with. It makes a whole lot of balls too, so it is nice to share. I plan to fry them up and give most of them away to neighbors. Enjoy your day no matter what the weather may be.

Good Maen, all. I am so sorry to hear about all the flooding - both in Queensland and in California. And here we sit in the middle of one of the area's worst droughts.

Your sauerkraut ball recipe looks yummy, Jackie. I will have to try it soon - although not on New Year's Eve. Jaime and I started a "tradition" last year of spending the night at Fernandina Beach - starting with appetizers at The Surf Restaurant and ending up with dinner and drinks at More...

Good New Year's Eve all,
I am feeling very lethargic, so am resorting to re-warming the coffee that Jerry provided yesterday.

Family traditions for New Year has always been to visit friends or have friends come to you, eat food that symbolized good luck for the new year, and the Rose Parade viewing (mostly on the television but occasional going to Pasadena and freeze your butt off with family and friends!

The news say that we're almost caught up with the water supply, Jane, So it has been a good soak. I worry about the people in flood zone but for the rest of us the place looks greener!

Eve, the float is an excellent one for putting sorrow aside and rolling up one's sleeve to build a future. Three cheers for them!

Shosho - that is called mud zones. Flood Zones are generally lowlands - mud zones are where fire has denuded the mountains/hills.

Did you check out the link & see the potato/yam walls? Really neat! The floats are so much more than you can see on TV - the detail is incredible.

Good morning everyone. Plum, the Indiana earthquake was a 3.8 magnitude near Kokomo and Marion, Indiana. We feel earthquakes occasionally in California, but I know it is rare in the midwest!

Hi Plum,

The Indiana earthquake is reported on on the United States Geological Survey pages - Intensity 3.8 and was felt over the whole of Indiana and a few bits of the neighbouring States as well. Moderate shaking and light damage only reported.

If you are ever in So. Cal. for the Holidays - decorating a float is an experience. La Cañada Flintridge is one of the few floats not built in a barn - it is built in town behind the water company and decorated under the freeway overpass.

It is all done by volunteers, many come from More...

That's a marvellous double bridge. It reminds me of the cattle-grids in the North of England with escape routes for hedgehogs that inadvertently fall into them.

Hi GmaJackie,

When you try your Australian strawberries, do try them with freshly ground (coarse) blacker pepper. I admit, it does sound unusual, but they are really good.

I love the USGS website for earthquakes. I've only felt 6 earthquakes in my life, but I've been able to look up 4 of them online.

All this talk of sauerkraut balls brings to mind Robin Williams' hilarious ad-libbed line about fish balls in "Good Morning, Vietnam" ... "I didn't know they had 'em"!

Our paper rates Sudoku puzzles with one to five stars. What are the criteria (or is it an algorithm) that rates the difficulty of Sudoku?

everybody. We had a LONG drive (11 1/2 hours) back from NC yesterday & are glad to be home again after a wonderful "northern" style Christmas. I posted a couple pics on my page of the winter wonderland we enjoyed up there on Dec. 26, but forgot to let anyone know they could look at them.

I made what turned out to be a CELEBRATORY pot of coffee, yesterday evening. If I hadn't tried to make a pot when I did, the water system in my tt would have frozen. (It nearly did anyway. There was only a trickle when I turned it on. After leaving it run for ten minutes it was back to normal.) I More...

Hi JBesoin,

There are no real criteria for rating sudokus. Each newspaper/magazine/sudoku website has their own rules.

The 'Sudoku Explainer' computer program (free from the inrenet) does give a rating, and is widely used, but is not universally accepted within the Sudoku community.
