appy - turning the page lifted my spirits! With so many people showing up to post all of a sudden I wasn't sure if I had a ghost of a chance to TOPP p. 4.

I, too, was raised never wearing white after Labor Day. I always wondered why black was acceptable year round and white wasn't? I always had a pair of black patent shoes for dress in the winter and sandals in the summer. I always wore a dress or skirt to church and school (with a slip under it)! The dress codes have really changed!

We always say if you can afford to wear white on a Winters Day, your pockets are lined with silver. Do you know what I miss? People don't often dress up for dinner when they go out for a beautiful meal. Now most are slouched in jeans and t-shirt, mobile(cell) on the table, trainers etc. I much More...

Patent leather shoes bring back childhood fashion memories. Back in the 60s/early 70s I had school dresses and church dresses and a Brownie/Girl Scout uniform dress.

I remember wearing dresses with slips to school until the year the stores started selling dresses in sets with matching More...

That's right Debby. We were only allowed to wear pants under our dresses on very cold days--which were very few in South Central Texas. Otherwise, dresses or skirts (which we wore with slips) were required for girls. School started after labor day and we always got fall clothes and lace up shoes or More...

Yes, André, nice meals no longer require nice clothes in the US either.
I think it became that way when 'special meals' at expensive restaurants became more commonplace... like weekly for some! When we go to expensive restaurants now, the restaurants are filled with mainly people in their More...

I can also remember wearing white gloves for Easter and "special occasions" such as weddings etc. I always managed to lose at least one!?! And remember the long "over the elbow" gloves for sleeveless fashions? I am so glad that is not the style today!!!

The temperature for Sunday sounds great! I am looking forward to seeing everyone!

I remember dressing up to go shopping in downtown Chicago: Dress, heels and gloves. Boy, am I glad THOSE days are over! But I do wish people would take a little pride in their appearance when dining in fine restaurants. Casual is acceptable to me. But sloppy is not. I remember years ago in More...

When I was in the Navy I had a pair of Corfam shoes that made patent leather look dull! I only wore them for inspections and always passed with flying colors!

Interesting discussion today - I agree with André - when I was younger we always made an effort to dress well for a restaurant but today even in the poshest of places you see people who look like they've been dragged backwards through a bush before arriving, which is sad. We also used to dress well before taking a plane!! Shell suits and matching his and hers jogging suits put an end to that!

Growing up in the North myself, I just figured that not wearing white after Labor Day was a case of proper etiquette. Now, living in a warm climate and wearing white all year, in retrospect I have developed a different perspective ... I now believe that after August, you in the Northern Climes are just WAY too ghastly white yourselves to don white clothing! He he ...

The last time I went to the theatre I was very disappointed. I was about the only person who had bothered to dress up. You would think that at todays ticket prices it would be the norm.

I used to love/hate the imminent arrival of October. Love because it is my birthday month and hate because it meant cold weather and because I was chesty, my mother would make me wear a liberty bodice. For those who have never heard of them you are soooo lucky. They were thick, had rubber buttons, were worn over the home knitted woolen vest and were advised for all children with chest problems.

I rememeber being dressed up and going to dinner with my family after Church -- My father "dumped" the salad dressing - remember the dressing when it came in 3 containers -- I remember - french, 1000 thousand and what would be the 3rd one ??? I didn't use salad dressing again for years -- remembering it soaking though my dress and my slip.

I didn't wear jeans -- wasn't allowed too, until my Senior year in High School - and that was only on Fridays I think --- the "bad" girls were the only ones who wore the "elephant bells"
but my skirts were short !!!

To me, a "fashion victim" is someone who mindlessly follows the dictates of the fashion industry. One of the few good things about the current recession is that more people are just not paying attention. As long as you're neat and clean and all of your private parts are covered, who cares what you're wearing????

Here is some fun tidbits I came across.

ETIQUETTE: One of the hoariest and well-known rule of etiquette is the idea that it is only proper to wear white shoes between Memorial Day and Labor Day. This is an outmoded rule, however, and only refers to the basic idea that one should wear More...

SUPERSTITION: Shoes do much more than just protect your feet, if you know how to use them. You can stop a dog from howling by taking off your left shoe and turning it upside down.

You can cure a cramp and prevent nightmares by leaving your shoes outside your bedroom door with one toe pointing toward the door and one toe pointing away from the door

You can counter-act any evil spells put on you by spitting in your right shoe before putting it on.

And a girl can learn the identity of her future husband by following these simple steps: 1) Place your shoes in the form of a letter T when you go to bed, saying “I place my shoes like a letter T, in hopes my true love I shall see, in his apparel and his array, as he is now and every day;” 2) have More...
