2. If f8=4=i2=a9,i4=3=f5,f6=6;column a is devoid of 6.Hence f8=6.UP81.

Well done, Alfred. I used essentially the same logic (starting with the assumption f8=4, but ... I ended up forcing both 3 and 4 into i2), but I had to take my time to spot it!

I sometimes feel guilty about having a time zone benefit. In Australia the new puzzle is published at midnight More...

That and the telephone lines, Shiela! When we were kids we used to sing
"Kookaburra sitting on the telephone wire, jumping up and down with his pants on fire!!"
Not such a happy outcome for the kookaburra, but we thought we were hilarious!!

Another alternative solution after UP=25, also starting from f8:
(4)f8=(4-3)f5=(3)f4-(3)i4=(179)i146-(79=4)i8=>a8<>4, UP=81
