I first spent 35 minutes on this without much success, and decided to go do some baking instead (for our Lutheran, diluted, wintery version of Mardi Gras). So I saved the board, came back and relatively quickly saw how to eliminate the wrong alternative from first a4 and then d1. Worthy of a "tough" classification, but not "insane".
