mAen! 33 mins. This was a very enjoyable tough one. More of these, and I might learn the techniques Steve's been trying to teach me! 20/Jul/07 1:32 AM |  |
This was an easy 'tough', but I don't know how long it took to solve because my timer stopped working midway through. 20/Jul/07 1:36 AM |  |
I like to hear the seagulls. They remind me of the water........ 20/Jul/07 3:28 AM |  |

Made a mistake on setup, put the 2 in the bottom middle box in the wrong square, and everything was wrong from there - took forever. Neat photo there though - I enjoy birds as long as they aren't leaving little surprises on my windowsills! 20/Jul/07 4:24 AM |  |

 It'd get a bit warm in winter if the fire's lit!! 20/Jul/07 8:13 AM |  |
You write that this was an easy 'tough' puzzle and I wonder what you know that I do not. I didn't even bother timing myself but I bet it was well over 1/2 hour (not including interruptions). Will someone who found this 'easy' share one tip about how to solve this puzzle so quickly? I would be much indebted as it was a real struggle simply to solve it at all. What is the trick? Thanks! 20/Jul/07 9:45 AM |  |
I like the chimney. Where is it located? 20/Jul/07 9:56 AM |  |

ERIC: Do you put in all of the possibilities when you start a puzzle, or do you first find as many of the unique placements as you can? The first approach is VERY slow and confusing. 20/Jul/07 12:33 PM |  |
For a 'tough', it was easier than usual. Eric, keep practicing on the medium and hard puzzles. I don't know how to write out a formal 'solution' to help you. For me, it takes time and practice to see the patterns, what you can safely eliminate. I still can't do the toughs every time, but it is gradually getting easier. 20/Jul/07 12:44 PM |  |
Judy, thanks for replying. As a rule I use possibilities as a last resort. I don't use them at all on the easy and rarely on the medium. I think I simply haven't learned the advanced tricks of the 'unique placements' very well yet...or else I am mentally slowing down more rapidly than I am aware. Can you share one of your techniques that I can practice? Again, thanks! Eric 20/Jul/07 12:48 PM |  |
Patty, thank you, too, for replying. I guess you're right about the practice. I only just started on the toughs very recently...but I can't help thinking that there must be a technique that I haven't yet learned on my own that someone could impart. I see folks do the easy ones in less than 2 More... 20/Jul/07 12:55 PM |  |
ERIC, I just typed up a complete, lengthy summary of my solving techniques, but it became lost in cyberspace ... @#\$%^&*!! So, I'll just make two suggestions! First, when you begin to place possibilities, try not putting them all in at once. Place them in one row, column, or box at a time, and More... 20/Jul/07 1:25 PM |  |
Hope that seagull did'nt make that mess on top of the chimney, would'nt like to be the chimney sweep that had to clean that up!! 20/Jul/07 1:48 PM |  |
Wow, Judy, I am sorry your valuable wisdom & time went whoooosh. I always use the 'automatically remove possibies' and the 'allow incorrect moves' on the hard & tough anyway (and I STILL take forever ;-). Waaah! Have a good night! 20/Jul/07 2:22 PM |  |
Eric, if you go up to the section above the choices (easy, hard etc) panel, which is called 'Blog', this is where our resident guru, Steve from Ohio has given us all the techniques to solve these tough ones. I still do not always recognise the patterns but it has been a great help!! 20/Jul/07 2:22 PM |  |
22:21. I'm with you on this one Eric. I only use possibilities on hard and tough and, while hard is always fairly easy to solve, I don't always finish tough. At least I recognised an X-wing in today's tough - I think that may have been a first! 20/Jul/07 6:23 PM |  |
Agree with Susan and Jane, that this is an easy one. Took about 30 mts., incl. time for filling in possibilities. No guess work required.Wouldnt it be better if those who comment only on the sudoku puzzle list it under 'Sudoku technique/question' rather than under 'General'? I tend to read only More... 21/Jul/07 4:06 AM |  |
I like the otugh puzzles but is there any way to avoid eventually guessing?Am I missing a technique somewhere? Please let me know! 21/Jul/07 8:59 PM |  |
