Shiela, I really don't think any of my three daughters will want my salts & spoons, at least not ALL of them. After hearing Mo's story about her BIL, I think I'm going to tell Rob (and my daughters) that after I'm gone I would like them to let any of my friends & family who want one to take their choice as a parting gift from me & as a lasting reminder of my love.

Last year I went whale watching with my daughter, off the Sunshine coast (Qld) on the 'Steve Irwin'. It was a combined birthday present for the two of us. Had a wonderful time & would highly recommend it.

Humpback whales vs. hunters

By Mary Ann Bragg
mbragg@capecodonline.com
June 10, 2009
It's not unusual for a passenger on a whale-watch boat to ask for their favorite humpback, according to Dolphin Fleet of Provincetown owner Steve Milliken. "We gave them More...

Scott Landry of the Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies said yesterday that he was aware of the possibility of Greenland seeking permission to hunt humpback whales, but he declined further comment.

Reading back through the previous comments I see that there are many of us in Sudokuland who are collectors & keepers. Does it seem to anyone besides me that our children's generation is much more likely to throw things out than keep them? And I don't mean just old things like antiques & More...

Kathy, I think the "wait and save for it" society is long passed. Today is very much see it, get it, use it, throw it away. Technology as it was didn't change so fast. Now when you buy something electronic or just electrical it is out of date by the time you get it home.

I wonder if there will be such a thing as antiques in the future. I'm very sure that present day furniture, for example, is not built to last! We have a chain of furniture stores here in the U.S. called "Rooms to Go" which enables you to buy everything you see in a display in the More...

Well I have spent most of this evening asleep on the sofa so I will now go to bed and probably be awake for hours. Goodnight all, and thanks for all your interesting heirloom stories. I notice no-one admitted to inheriting millions or a mansion!

I am a descendant of James Selkirk on whose adventures, Daniel Defore based Robinson Crusoe. I have inherited a necklace of some type of vegetation (nut/berry) which legend says was made by him when he was on the deserted island in the West Indies. I have no idea whether that is true but I am a sceptic.

Correction - Alexander Selkirk. James Selkirk is my great uncle. All this talk of dementia has unsettled me.

Mymare, Jane: I can HIGHLY recommend the Electra Townies! I bought mine shortly after I retired, in 2004, and this past spring rolled it past 10000 miles. (actually a bit more than that -- I didn't get the "bike computer" until I'd had the bike for 3 or 4 months).

Aimee, I had an unusual encounter with a whale while sailboat racing in the Pacific. The whale surfaced right in front of my boat. Quickly my hubby and I got already to tack when the whale went below. Whew! Didn't have to change course. The darn whale surfaced along side us. (It was a biiiiiggggg one, longer than our 24 foot boat) It decided to blow its hole. Ugggg! Rotten fish breath!!!!
