The river red gum produces very hard wood. Many of the streets of Melbourne were paved with red gum blocks, which became sought after firewood when they were eventually removed. It is also so dense that it will not float. Very difficult to cut too - most of them were shaped by convicts as were the 'bluestone blocks which were another feature of the roads.
