Eve/Oregon - It amazes me the heat you have had already this year. Is it unusual for it to be this HOT in May? We woke up to 38 deg. (F). But, as my sister mentioned, "At least it isn't snowing!"

OK, I'll bite, Debby and Shiela. What is Vegemite?

I've lead a sheltered life.

Heidi - It is a "spread" that is made in Australia. It is yeast based and has vitamins in it. Mine, that was given to me, is in a tube, but Jenn has seen it here in the States in a jar. It is dark in color. It has a taste of its own. I have never seen anything like it here in the States. Maybe some of the Aussies can share their opinions of it?
20/May/08 5:34 AM

Someone said earlier vegemite has a flavor similar to Oriental Brown Sauce. The Aussies say they grew up eating it. guess maybe that is it, you have to acquire a taste for it early in life. Another thing, many Americans use just TOO MUCH, this is one of those "a little dab will do you" items.

Is it a spread of some sort? Or used for flavoring? Or?????

Sudokuland, another great day!
Good to see you back Anu.
Heidi, Vegemite as MizT said is a spread that you use sparingly on toast or crackers, very salty and almost black in color. Sure others will post links for this.

Hi all
good evening....it is already tomorrow in Australia..sun rising. About vegimite, yes you can use it for flavor and spread. As Miztricia sais a little dab here and there is plenty. You can have it on toast or sandwich. Taste much better with a bit of butter or similar spread. For my More...

Mymare - Have a great evening!!!!

Danstell - Hey! Thanks for your added "input." I could sure use that extra energy today!!! I find it a little salty and I thought I had put it on thin, but maybe not thin enough. Anyway, I thought it was interesting and we have heard a lot about it here. It is always fun to try something new.
20/May/08 6:53 AM

Broni - Thank you, also, for your "input." I tried to describe it, but I just felt like I didn't cover all the bases.

I believe you can use it to flavor soups and gravies also.

I enjoyed vegemite....I like salty stuff and I find its a great addition when making beef gravy, but as mentioned...a little dab will do ya, and butter helps it go down a lot smoother....but like olives...it is definitely an acquired taste.
