CG - I'm curious, since you are five hours from Toronto, by any chance do you live anywhere near the Inn at Manitou? I had the pleasure of spending a week there several years ago enrolled in their super tennis program. I flew into Toronto and rented a car to drive north, but I don't remember how many hours the drive was.

3:23 Thank god the Springboks won. I couldn't watch the game (apart from the fact that I was asleep!) as I was too frightened that England would do another of their pull the rabbit out of the hat things and kick themselves a Web Ellis victory.

Although I don't follow Rugby at all, in the rather mean spirit of ABE (anyone but England) I have to congratulate SA.

Thanks Mary, the weather doesn't look too promising but I've had the forecast e'mailed to me from the other side of the world to say that it's only early morning showers here in Albany! I'm going regardless, I hope the others join me, which I'm sure they will.
You have a lovely day, too, More...

Helena, it would never have happened if I hadn't a firm grip on my thumbs. I'm letting go now. If anything bad happens anywhere in the next few minutes, I don't want to hear about it.

Jane: The Inn of Manitou is in the Muskoka region in Central Ontario, probably a 2 and i/2 hour drive north of Toronto. To get there by the most direct route from Ottawa (on two-lane highways), it would be about a 6 hour drive going through Algonquin Park.
21/Oct/07 9:50 AM

P.S. Jane - Ottawa is in north-east Ontario on the border of the province of Quebec.

Kate(Lane Cove), a very to you. Have a good day.

Greg I'm a bit perturbed by the Players’ Rules of Engagement for the Noble Game of Conkers as it does not state how big the nut can be...surely size matters? I reckon it would be a great spectator sport...

anyhoo if nothing else, it's good to know that "Conkers have been carried in the pocket to help prevent piles and rheumatism, and used in wardrobes to keep away moths..."

I have just taken a few thousand conkers up to my debris dumping ground. The tree itself is quite dirty, sticky brown caps, followed by dropping petals, followed by unripened chestnuts, then the nuts, casings & stems, and finally, leaves. Late fall is a hard-hat time.

I just read that conkers are the nuts of a Horse chestnut tree and that children would tie them to string and swing them in order to break the nut of another child who is trying to do the same. Is that true in your part of the world? Or does it mean something else?
