I used an Internet bird reference to identify the bird:

The homepage of that Hornbill site has photos of hundreds (if not thousands) of the world's bird species. I recommend it to all birders seek to ID an unfamiliar bird.

Hi Eve. Very hard to ID birds without a photo and just an "anecdotal description" (to use scientific jaragon). Try this site, it has pics of all the world's ducks, teal, and mergansers- including the ones we humans foolishly mismanaged into extinction.
