Hey Happy birthday Appy,

Good maeN all.

To all who commented on some of my photos recently ,Thansk so much for your comments. Apologies for not replying, I was away and missed their showing. The coral rock pool was tidal - for those who asked.. I wandered there with my camera while the others were fishing off the rocks. No I wasn't snorkling.

Good morning, John, Appy, Shiela, Debby, and fii!!!
Hope your b'day was wonderful, Appy!!! Did you hear me squeaking out the birthday song? Lately after 2 weeks of laryngitis, possibly 3 weeks, my voice has not quite recovered.

AT THE RACES
One day while he was at the track playing the ponies and all but losing his shirt, Mitch noticed a Priest who stepped out onto the track and blessed the forehead of one of the horses lining up for the 4th race. Lo and behold, that horse--a very long shot--- won the race.

How is your weather today, Rayray? Has the wind died down?

Columbus Day always reminds me of the brave exploration party Columbus assembled in 1492, with all four ships sailing off into the unknown. You remember the names of his four ships: The Nina, the Pinta, the Santa Maria and the Clyde. You don't hear too much about the Clyde anymore, since that's the one that sailed over the edge.

Good morning to everyone. Picked up my dad at the airport yesterday. I'm off to yoga this morning, then will have a day full of cooking. Kids and grandkids arrive this afternoon. It will be mildly chaotic around here with 4 generations, but we have so much to be grateful for. Happy Thanksgiving to everyone.

I had not heard of Clyde, and because of such a simple mistake, too. She should have known better. Clyde ... she? Aren't all ships female?

In answer to your question, Sheila, the weather now is back to 'gale-force'. The morning was OK and the sun and quietness then seemed to say it was all over - but it is now back to the status-quo - of stormy weather. The sea is still monstrous.

Jane, thank you for that amazing link yesterday!!! Apart from the terrifying content, what beautiful pictures. What heartbreak for the owners of those homes. I think we are all in BIG trouble - and the climate change cynics don't believe!

Love it, Daplap! All teachers of older students ought to slip that joke into their folder for Columbus Day!

mariane - Jaime and I came within inches of buying a home there when we retired five years ago. Our oceanfront dream would have been an oceanbottom nightmare!

mariane prompted me to try Jane's link from yesterday again - this time successfully - I failed yesterday. Yes the sea there (at its worst) looks similar to here and I suppose that damage would be happening here right now had it not been for our very strong sea defences - being a resilient sea-wall, and the many break-waters at 100-200m intervals.

Speaking of water - keep your head up, Rayray, and batten down the hatches!!

The Outer Banks were never meant to have as many houses as there are. There are no sea walls or breakwaters. Being barrier islands, they are (rightfully) allowed to shift and move as nature sees fit. The problem is the overdevelopment - and people who insist on building right at the ocean's More...

Jane,
I'm glad my bedroom is at the back of the flat.
In the front room the gale sounds like an express train passing within six inches of the windows!

Scary, Rayray! How do you get out to the market with all that wind?
26/Nov/09 4:52 AM

Oh dear, just realized it's nearly 1 pm. I really must get back to cooking for tomorrow's feast. I've already cooked the cranberry sauce and potatoes. Now I'm off to make my pumpkin cheesecake and cornbread-clam stuffing. If there's time before we go out tonight, I'll also make my sweet potato and apple casserole. See you later!!!

Keith - Maybe it was Clydia...(?)
26/Nov/09 4:59 AM

Keith, I don't think there is any rule about female names for boats or ships, for example, the "Nimitz" (sp?) is named for Admiral Nimitz. Not very intimidating if warships were given women's names, unless it was a famously murderous woman (like Lizzy Borden)

While everyone stateside is prepping for Thanksgiving, I've been festooning the house with garlands, bows and all things Christmas. Tree will go up this week too.
