And once "that ditty" is firmly in your brain, it's next to impossible to get it out! I'll be singing and humming all day!

12:41 Showed this kookaburra photo to my daughter and she loves the picture and wants to know if it's on a gum tree. Anyone know? Also need an Aussie to US translation...
We have on cd an Australian medley: The Kookaburra song and the Waltzing Matilda song. What ARE all those odd words: swag More...

Uh, Plum???? .... the caption says ".. in a Gum Tree".
02/Jul/08 4:37 AM

Plum the words are old Aust slang use only in song & to confuse tourists
swag = sleeping bag
tucker-bag = food container
billy = can used as kettle over fire
jumbuck = lamb
so....hobo steals lamb for dinner, gets done by cops,jumps into water-hole, can't swim...!

There's a new comment from Shiela! I'll try again! The words really aren't slang anymore, most of them are used all the time, particularly in the country. You always put the billy on when you're camping no matter how flash your camp stove & kettle are! the boys in the bush all have swags in More...

Matilda was also another name for a swag apparently. It can also be called a shiralee. And "waltzing" has nothing to do with the dance (the song is in 4/4, not 3/4). According to a story about Waltzing Matilda on the radio on the weekend "waltzing" actually comes from a More...

Heidi -- Did the caption say it was in a gum tree? I had to make the caption go away for her to see the picture, and I couldn't show it to her for quite some time, so I forgot what the caption said by the time I showed it to her. I feel so silly.

Um. Thanks for all the translations and explanations, and for the new words I don't understand like flash and ute . I'll listen to the song again, follow the link and do a little bit of further research if it's still necessary.
I know. Maybe I need some More...
