Good mAen to everyone.
Another picture of Mid September trip to NZ ,but this time may I ask what' Fox Glacier' means??
It is nice picture ,needs some explanation .
 |  |
Solved it reasonably fast.

Wagdy, a glacier is a huge mass of ice slowly flowing over a land mass, sometimes several kilometers long. A fox is a small, dog-like mammal. Fox is also a sur-name (like Vicente Fox, the former president of Mexico). So, Fox Glacier is a large mass of ice named after a small animal or a person named Fox.
Perhaps someone from NZ could clarify that.

:-) In Finland is much less of ice!!!
 |  |
Wagdy/HalT Fox glacier was named after a New Zealand Prime Minister William Fox. Check out http://www.glaciercountry.co.nz/glaciers.asp?id=11.
 |  |
Many thanks HalT for these information and let us wait may we add some other information.
 |  |
Thanks, Ed. I was pretty sure it was named for a person, just couldn't remember who. Guess I should have Googled it. :>)

Glad the picture is dated. It would be interesting to see the changes as global warming reduces its size.

It would be very interesting to visit this.

Wagdy, Ed, Chris...this pic is taken a long way from the foot of the glacier. I was there a couple of years back...so Rose has taken an approach shot, walking towards the glacier. It's awesome, especially as it has shrunk back several hundred metres leaving moraines to show its earlier position. More...

Good afternoon to all! A lot of dirt in that ice. How fast is it melting?
 |  |

To Wagdy Kamel From Cairo Egypt: I have a few glacier pictures posted on my Flickr photo page from a glacier in Canada. Enjoy!

we wanted to go to frans joseph glacier but the rain was horizontal so we tried fox glacier and the rain had almost stopped allowing us to walk up close to the end of the glacier.
they have markers showing how far the glacier has receded over the years. quite amazing.

Good maeN all. 8:33 You can feel the cold and damp....glaciers really are quite spectacular.

Amazing picture from NZ. Hi Karen.
 |  |
Read somewhere on the weekend that a dumb aussie and another tourist entered an ice-cave that collapsed causing all sorts of fracas. I think it was Franz Josef near Fox. But I seem to recall the report saying the glacier is advancing rapidly which is making it very unstable. Confirmation please anyone?
