Lovely photo - I thought it looked like a possum as it was coming in to focus.

Ok, I did my homework and discovered this is an Australian Brushtail Possom. They are definitely cuter than the possom we have in the US. Our possoms have ugly beady eyes and nasty teeth! (But their fur is beautiful! Back in the days when I wore fur - which I no longer do - I had a possom-lined raincoat).

Another possom factoid which everyone probably know: the possom is the only marsupial we have in the US (although there are 65 species of possom throughout the Americas); whereas there are more than 170 different kinds of marsupials in Australia, New Guinea and nearby islands!

10Q, Jane for doing all that research and relaying that info on the possum. Whoever took this shot did a great job. Thx for sharing.

Jane - thanks for the info! I had to look twice because I didn't recognize this as a possum! The possums around my house are down right ugly. (They remind me of a rat!) This little guy in the picture is cute! I believe our possum is spelled opossum?

Yes, I was going to say this must be a different breed than the American 'possum. Quite like an oversized white rat is what they look like.

Sorry about the misspelling! It's 'possum' - not 'possom'. And, of course, the full name is 'opossum', but just about everyone drops the first 'o'.

Wikipedia has a fairly comprehensive article on the possum -

if you are interested. It is a great photo, but not one of mine.

A family of Brushtails managed to kill an adolescent Oak Tree at our old house. They nested in a creeper under the shelter of the patio and we used to wait patiently in the evening to watch them emerge and start feeding, What we didn't realise was that the little critters were feeding on the More...

Thanks for the cute picture, and thanks Jane for the research. I agree - the possums around here are downright ugly (nasty temper too!)

Cute little opossum; so soft and demur...

I know how you feel, Ian. Lovely little creatures but they know how to destroy a garden!! They also sound like elephants when they drop from my neighbour's trees onto the roof over my bedroom in the middle of the night!

we have lots of these little fellows in the trees out the back. they also come down and feed on the scraps and the cats food.

Thanks for the info, Jane. Used to see possums quite a bit in Florida, but haven't seen one yet here in California. Lots of raccoons, though.

I guess I've only seen possums in three dimensions (flat!) on the side of the road. I didn't know they could be so cute either.

Hi - love these little guys. I feed them on my roof most nights and listen to them running over our roof to a huge gum tree where I watch them with an outside light on them. They are very tame and will take food from your hand. If I go for a swim at night they let me know I am in their territory.

Lots of raccoons and possum here, but not that kind of possum. That one is cute!

Is it possum or opossum, never figured that out any ideas?

Kevin, I think the American animal is generally called an opossum (see the comment by Jane above).
The antipodean variety is called the possum. (Please feel free to correct me if you thnks I am wrong)

The opossum is from the Americas mostly in South America. The possum from Australia and New Guinea is a completely different species of marsupial. The possum was named as such because it looked similar to the South American species. The naming of the Australian town called OPossum Bay was a balls up according some of my readings.
