8:38, mAen, google it before i read the comments. http://www.saint-petersburg.com/museums/st-isaacs-cathedral. asp built between 1818 and 1858. It's amazing that a country with so many beautiful cathedrals could have banned religions for so long.

Good Morning everyone. Yes it is a photo I took of the ceiling of St Isaacs Cathedral during our visit to St Petersburg. Yes Patty, that is a dove of peace high up in the centre of the dome. Well spotted.
Wagdy Kamel, I'll get some more information on the cathedral and post it here soon.

There are a number of references to the cathedral on google (St Isaacs Cathedral). Here are a few
http ://eng.cathedral.ru/isaac
http://saint-petersburg.com/virtu al-tour/st-isaacs-cathedral.asp
By studying these I discovered that the dove in the dome is the dove of the Holy Spirit, not the dove of peace as I thought. Enjoy.

Ian, I find it exceedingly difficult to not go straight to solutions when photos like yours or Anne's from WA get such a wrap! So, thanks for the reward at the end! I only have to take two hours to get it!! I am using a Canon SLR 300D at the moment, but even after 3 years, I still find more that it can do...you have an enviable mastery. Robin

Robin, thank you for the compliment, I am humbled by your praise. I tell my friends to pause for a moment just before they take the photo and ask themselves if there is a better way of taking the photo - different angle, different composition, different lighting. I believe that it's that 'stop More...

While it is a beautiful cathedral, I do not think prayer should be offered directly to St. Isaac, or any saint for that matter, as they are not dieties in and of themselves. Guess I am showing my Protestantism!

I hear you,Jim. Never have understood the whole 'mediator' position. I certainly don't have someone do my praying for ME! Why should I have to talk to a go-between?

I should have mentioned earlier that we were wandering around the cathedral, fascinated by the beauty and opulence of the decorations, when I happened to glance up and saw this wonderful dome above us. I took a quick photo which turned out to be quite a treasure. I have printed it on A4 More...

as/Finland, you said it was called Leningrad when you were first there. That must have been a few years ago, I think the name changed back to St Petersburg in 1991.
