Looks very relaxing! Judy - they haven't figured out why the whales beached themselves - but as you can imagine there are lots of theories. They came from the open sea so it was not as if they were trapped in a bay or cove.

Thanks, Lucy. I just took a moment and read up on the beaching phenomenon. I was surprised to learn that very few of the events occur in response to illness, most being precipitated by the whales' closely-knit social system. Breaks my heart to see those beautiful mammals lying there dying on the sand.
