giblet, I didn't catch this, I bought it during a visit to the Philippines. If you think of snails, then this is the shell of a marine snail. I became interested in sea shells during our time in Papua New Guinea.
What is your interest I.O.?

Thanks, Ian. Are these the ones from which the Romans obtained the Tyrian purple dye, or are they a different genus? Gasteropods seem to be a large class of molluscs.

giblet, I don't believe so. There is a murex with the common name of 'Purple Dye Murex' which I think is the culprit. There is information on the site -

giblet, there is also a reference to be found on -

I hope this is helpful.

giblet, my 'Good Book' says that there are about 90,000 species in the Class Gastropoda (Gastropods) in the phylum Mollusca (Molluscs). Gastropods are snails and slugs - marine, freshwater and terrestrial.

Ian, thank you for all the references- I'm getting quite overwhelmed! By the time I've investigated them all, I'll be well versed in the habits and anatomy of Gastropods, hopefully including the 'wentletrap' which has such a wonderful name. (We had lectures about Gastropods in Zoology in the dim past but don't remember much now, except their digestive systems.)

giblet, I would think that the digestive systems of Gastropods would be the least attractive part of the creature. It is their shells that fascinate me.
