I print them & do them on the train going home. Takes 1 hour to do all daily ones from easy to tough, sometimes I have to finish the tough one at home though... but getting better.

1) You are right; this argument depends on uniqueness of the solution.
2) I think this argument is correct. If there is a solution with
2 4
4 2 then
4 2
2 4 is also a solution.
So uniqueness implies [7,2] = 3.
(Correction to original post: I should have written squares [7,2], [8,2], [7,9], [8,9] of the second grid posted by gb above).
