2:38 um, I'll stick with my little electric zizzer for grinding coffee.
So, what is it really? And does the dog pull it?

Thanks, Karen. I've missed you all, too. My poor puter has been serviced and is now carrying me back to Sudokuland and all my friends.

Baseball? I miss warm afternoons outdoors listening to WJR and Ernie Harwell, the voice of the Detroit Tigers. Back when I followed the game, went to some games, and knew the lineup.

LOL, At first I thought it was a rickshaw in really bad shape... but, a coffee grinder? Too bad this is a photo and not a video - it would be great to see it in action!

Oh, good Maen fellow Sudoku-ites!

I can remember from my childhood a man who would come round on his bike, jack up the back wheel then pedal away turning a circular stone where he would sharpen knives and scissors for a few pence each. Imagine nowadays having a knife sharpener on the streets!

1:57 Maen! I was afraid this was some sort of ancient torture device... coffee grinder sounds muuuuch better :)

Another man would call out for pots and pans to be mended. We had a metal bowl with a hole. He mended it with a kind of double washer and it went on to do many years service.

Welcome back Plum.
Have a very nice time to all of you.

That is one heavy duty grinder! Looks like it could grind a LOT of coffee in a short period of time! (Speaking of coffee... reminds me that I haven't had my coffee yet, but I will grind it with my 'zizzer' as Plum calls it!)

I suppose in these times we should start reviving the make do and mend culture of just after WWII

I have vague memories of seeing something like this in Costa Rica, growing up. Our home was surrounded by Cafetals.

GannieMo, my grandparents exemplified the make due and mend culture of pre-WWII. I love the word "tinker" both in its noun and verb forms. It refers back to the traveling "fixer" who repaired tin.

Cleanliness certainly wasn't an issue, was it?

Oh, pardon me... everyone!

Kathy - Holy cow, does the coffee taste like mud? It was fresh ground this morning ...

Heidi, you're such an interesting person. I didn't know you'd grown up in Costa Rica. How about that? If I had to guess at your childhood it would be running barefoot in braids through pastures of blue grass.

Hey, !
Welcome back!

Oh! GannieMo! You are bringing up such memories! I lived in a house that had no indoor plumbing until I was 10 years old! (Sorry, I WON'T go back to that by choice!) Lived on hand-me-downs. (Maybe that's why I still have a hard time throwing anything away!) Some things you'll do, some you won't. More...

I'd love to have chickens again but this plot isn't suitable. Our first house in France 20 years ago we had both chickens and ducks. Of corse I couldn't kill them and when they were the oldest foul in France by about 6 years we had to get a neighbour in to do the deed.
BTW all the time we had chickens we never saw a snake on the property but within days of them going we had loads.

Do girls still learn to knit, crochet and embroider? Of course we didn't have TV and you can get a lot more done listening to the radio.

Funny, GMo! We had rabbits for the same purpose! But our parents soon found that if you NAME an animal, you can't/won't eat it! So, some person had some very nice rabbit meals when we sold them, but not us!
