Glinda, the problem with internet is that there is less human contact but a lot of short conversing. A true discussions needs face to face contact to get the finer nuances of the messages given for that intimacy of thought. So when we do come together we make up for it by hugging and hopefully longer sentences!

I really blame it on football. Now virtually everyone can watch South American football and with so many Brazilians and Argentinians playing in Europe, the after goal activities are being seen by more people and consequently being spread accross the whole community. It's not like the perfunctory pretend kiss to each cheek practised in Europe years ago. This is full on and genuinely meant.

Bean
I'm amazed that you call it swine flu. I've noticed that the Herald-Sun consistently was calling it pig flu as I suspect they thought their readers wouldn't know what swine were. You obviously read The Age. (oops I read the Herald-Sun)

Why didn't I think about doing this!!!

Outside Bristol Zoo there is a car park for 150 cars and 8 coaches.

There also used to be a very pleasant attendant
with a ticket machine charging cars 1 pound and coaches 5 pound.

This parking attendant worked there for all of 25 More...

Tsk, tsk. I feel my role as messenger is being questioned. Well, I have you know, if it were not for me you would be singing this song.

Has our expectant Jill gone,
Oh, where, Oh where
Could she be?
She was due in two weeks,
But left us this week,

No, Karen - it will take you a few days to realise how busy you're going to be, then you might need treatment - in the meantime just get the message through to us, OK?

An aside to your 'hug' question, Glinda...
Has anyone noticed an upsurge in hand-shaking amongst young lads these days?
In the days of yore, it was a proper form of greeting among men, but even my 80yo father mentions that he never remembers doing it with his peers when he was a youth. He More...

Thank you Bean, I was also going to mention the current thinking of banning hugging in schools at the moment due to the spread of the flu. Here in Victoria, we are up to almost 100 diagnosed cases, most of them school students.

And yes, I do think hugging is on the rise, more of it, I say! We are becoming much more demonstrative people IMO.

'Pig' Flu update..
More than 3000 Victorians are now in voluntary quarantine as the swine flu infection spreads, although the cases are still largely confined to Melbourne's northern suburbs.

Of the confirmed Victorian cases, 53 are women and 46 men. Their ages range from two to 64, with More...

On the subject of hugging: I had assumed that the growing acceptance of hugging and other demonstrations of affection was a by-product in this country of the multi-cultural society and the influx of people from countries where such demonstrations are the norm. I like it when it's sincere, but not More...

So sorry to hear about the spread of swine flu down under. Take care of yourselves.
Agreed that good sportsmanship, while expected in the past, has now become something to praise as seemingly out of the ordinary.

CynB, I will have to go straight away to the mental ward. If not, that darn mother instict will pop out and then no one will be able to raise my child like I can and I will never get to go to the mental ward. OOOOh, I have heard they have good drugs up there. Anyone, know for certian if they do?

Just bear with it, Karen - it will turn out to be a blessing.
Keith - we even have a cruise ship with 3 confirmed cases aboard which has had to return to Brisbane. Check this out!

I think the western male is exceedingly inhibited abut physical contact with same sex.
This is undesirable in poutcome as it leads to all sorts of problems - like vandalism, assault against others, and other crime. It is an archaic inhibition that was designed to create cannon fodder for the purpose of colonial invasion.
29/May/09 2:49 PM
 |  |

I'd go further and say that this aversion to physical contact is totally psychologically and sociologically destructive with no benefits whatsoever.
29/May/09 2:52 PM
 |  |

Yes, I'd heard it was around your way Bean, take care.
Yesterday I asked my GP if they'd had much to do with it, and she said that two of the passengers from the cruise liner that docked with flu cases on board are from Cockatoo! Jokingly, before we got to the doctor's rooms, I had said to hubby that if anyone coughs, move away from them.
There seems to be an outbreak in the Gippsland.

Ian, I don't think the ump can make a decision on this play. There was even an attempt to imagine that it never happened.

A tempest in a tea spot.

Innuendo is worth exactly how thinly it can be spread.

And Keith; sadly, I'm afraid you are whistling (polite euphemism) into the wind.

Now as to hugging, bring 'em on! We all need physical contact IMHO. I've noticed how often our President hugs other men and I absolutely love that trend. Well, Rayray, and many others, you've said it better. Thanks, Glinda, for bringing it up. (For Jim)

You are more likely to catch any type of flu or cold by shaking hands with someone infected (whether they know it or not) if they have sneezed or coughed into their hand or a hanky and have not then washed their hands, than you are when air kissing or hugging someone. You then touch something or More...

Hi Mo, I was just looking at some of the beautiful jewelry on your blog page as well as your eBay site. I can't wait for my sister to get back from her holiday in Tasmania to show her - she will be so excited (and probably become an eBay customer).
