Interesting. We have a Paper Birch tree here. Looks a bit different. You can peel off the outer bark as paper.

Our Birch Bark is great for starting camp fires! It looks very similiar.

maen all! do not confuse this tree with any kind of birch or beech...it is the scourge of the everglades...you cannot burn it with a torch...the bark is so frail you cannot write on it or use it to make anything worthwhile...i don't think it can even be used as pulp for making paper...it just takes over any wet environment it can get a foothold in!

The comment I made yesterday regarding animals clearly applies to plants also. In the wrong environment thay become a major problem.

The paperbark when peeled off properly can and was used by the Australian aborigines for art work and various covering, artifacts. The trick is to get a few layers together

It is also ideal as a lining for hanging pots
