I don't understand why a cygnet was considered an ugly duckling. They're still gorgeous! It's funny, though, that cygnets from white swans and black swans are all that smoky color.

That's "swan" fine photo, Ian!

Originally only white swans were known to Europeans, and when the first black swans were discovered, there was quite a problem around deciding what these black birds were, because they couldn't possibly be swans - swans were, by definition, white. Silly Europeans.

At this stage the parent swans are very protective, understandably,and it's not a good idea to try to pat the little darlings.

maen all! a few years back a black swan escaped from a local zoo/park and made such a sensation that birders from near and far were up to their you know what in the great jersey swamp trying to get a glimpse of it. it took about two weeks before van swoon park reported it missing and just a pet not a rarity from down under.
