I never heard what happened to the Washington Monument after it was closed for repairs following the earthquake. Is it open again? What was the extent of the repairs? I suppose some googling would tell me.

Obelix was here?

(time left out :-)

There was some discussion yesterday (see Hard) whether posting times is ok. I usually do so, but I will stop if we judge that it creates a less friendly chat room. I can see both sides.

Such posts serve as notices of activity (user X was More...

Hello Jyrki - I think it's up to the individual if they want to post their times or not. This page has had a lot more comments lately and I don't see that posting our times has made any difference. I think it's fun to compare times and some we find easy while others we find harder than usual.

Jyrki, my opinion is post your time if you want to. I'm not offended. I'm impressed by those who can solve quickly and not at all put out if it takes me much longer. There are so many variables for speed beyond solver's mental ability including what type of a device, size of screen, mouse vs mouse More...

(Also, how well eye muscles track is separate from a solver's mental ability. And where you pick to start the puzzle gets more intuitive with practice but is still a matter of luck that can shave or add seconds or even minutes to one's time. Also, some people don't start timing until after the possibilities are in and some don't use possibilities. Apples and oranges!!!)

The Monument was closed for repairs, It reopened but there were ongoing problems with the elevator so they closed it again to do further repairs plus added security screening. It will reopen in 2019.

Hi Jyrki,
I'm glad you brought up the subject. I don't understand why my times are so different from other's. Is there some etiquette about which boxes you're allowed to check? I think we could learn a lot from each other. Let's talk about it.

Interesting time conversation Jyrki
Much depends on individual preferences and different perspectives!!

Although I am usually much slower than those who post their times, I find it interesting to see those times. Gives me something to shoot for!

From a 'slow' puzzler, if fast times bothered me, I wouldn't be here. I find it interesting that the average time of the 'fast group' is routinely about 1/3 of the time it tales me. Today was 10:19. I don't look at it so much as a challenge as a point of interest.

I never 'study' a puzzle More...

Interesting day for me to forget to start the timer! Thanks for bringing up the subject of whether to post times or not Jyrki.

4.29. Some days it's just an achievement to finish. I just like the challenge, i'm 75 now and am chuffed when I get a reasonable time.

Chris, there are small minded, petty people everywhere. Don't ever let them get you down as they are a waste of space. I hope to get close to your times, and every now and again seem to have a better coffee and consequently beat your time! I've managed to also beat Jyrki's time......what More...

Can anyone tell me why 'Clicking the playing grid places the current number' option exists? Why would anyone click on the grid for nothing to happen? For that matter why allow incorrect moves? Do you want to continue to deceive yourself?
20/Nov/17 9:04 AM
 |  |

DotCom, I use click the grid to place numbers. Something DOES happen - the number goes into the spaces clicked on, as a possibility or deletion (right click) or solution (left click). It cannot be used if you are in competition with Chris or other fast solvers, who use the keyboard numbers to place solutions.

What I cannot imagine is why anyone would use Highlight Current Square.

I like to see solving times posted, even though I typically get up a lot, eat, watch TV, read email, and do way too many other things while solving to time myself.

DotCom, allow incorrect moves allows the possibility of racking your brain, trying to figure out where you went wrong, when you think you are done, but the 'reward' doesn't appear. Instead of 'show solution', try to find it yourself...

For what it is worth I don't post my times because I don't challenge myself on time - to complete is good enough for me Wherever you go in life there will be someone who wants to express a negative - so what, if that amuses their small minds.... For those who do post times please carry on and enjoy. I personally delight in your success

Sarah, I'm with you on Highlight Current Square. It does serve one purpose for me though - when it turns itself back on it tells me that my sudoku cookie is gone and so are any games I may have saved!

I used to attempt to run with the timer, but found I was too good at forgetting to start it, pause it if interrupted, resume it, you name it... I also found the added pressure of being timed distracted me from the main aim of solving the puzzle. So in the end I decided to ignore it.
