again. We are doing our best feeding those birds
that choose to styy here for the winter. They reward us with their beauty in our garden (and mating songs later in the spring).

Maen. We're trying to warm up, too - all the way to a balmy 30 degrees.

We have been seeing many migratory birds passing through South Florida, heading north. Lots of swallows, warblers, etc. A few weeks ago we had American Robins by the hundred, but they are mostly gone now, heading north. Hang in there norteleños, warmth is on its way!

Jim from Jupiter - I think the robins are hanging out here in the Tampa area now! We've finally made it back to temps in the 70's again. The two nights of hard freezes sure made our yard look bad even though we tried to cover things up as best we could.

Maen all - I enjoy all the birds in Florida. Have a Florida Bird book in the truck and as we ride the citrus groves I try to identify who is who. My favorite are the birds of prey. Always love to see the Bald Eagles as they soar in the blue sky. 78 here today.

Concerning robins: this is at least the second winter when I have observed robins 20-30 in December , January and February.

Must be global warming?

Maen, y'all! Is that a scissors-tailed swallow? I don't think we have birds with tails like that here.

maybe one day they are here back? it is soooo cold just now in Finland.... my brain is frozen!

The robins have been around our place for a few weeks now but disappear for a couple of days when a freezing wind blows through.

Getting much needed rain here at the moment.

One swallow doesn't make a summer

jeb/ks sorry to disagree with you but it is a Welcome Swallow (Hirundo neoxena). The Barn Swallow, which looks very similar, does not frequent the Sydney area. It's habitat is much further north. The Barn Swallow is distinguished from the Welcome Swallow by a black breastband which separates a white breast from the chestnut throat feathers.(Auth: Pizzey's Field Guide to the Birds of Australia)

Thank you for the correction. I was using Max C. Thompson, Charles Ely (1989); Birds In Kansas Vol. I, University of Kansas Museum Of Natural History. The similarity between the two birds is remarkable. Take a look at my definition of 'toxophilite' on page three of Easy comments.

Thanks jeb, I try not to be a 'toxophilite' but you successfully suckered me into the discussion. Never mind, I have learnt something and enjoyed the challenge.

We once had some of these swallows nesting in our carport. The cat would sit on the roof of the car, swiping at them as they flew around her and swooped close to her head - regular little teasers, they were. I don't think she ever caught one, though.
