Hello all and a happy Thursday (at least in my little piece of our world), very unique feathers, do these birds actually fly and can they go very high or for long distances, does anyone know or care to respond? Thanks if you do.

What kind of bird is this? This is a great capture of the bird. The water looks so calm.

If the body mass to wing area ratio is any indication, I'd say that bird will be lucky to hoist himself off that piling.

More likely, he'll have to just roll off into the water with all the grace and aplomb he can muster.

That is a Cormorant, I believe. Yes, they fly, but they dive and swim beautifully. They are fishing birds.

Cormorants are used for fishing in China. The birds are attached to leashes and dive off small, flat boats.

In the USa we use roosters to wake us up (on the farm). BTW if you look in the background you will see a crane building my summer home. Ya'll all be invited when its finished.

Thanks to everyone for the kind comments. This was a beautiful crisp winter morning and this magnificent cormorant was drying its wings in the sun - the river was very calm and reflective. Later in the day I returned on the ferry and saw dolphins from the boat. A very memorable day!

We have comorants in New England as well, they are black though, and a lot smaller
