I never got the hang of crocheting (everything meant to be flat turned into a hat) but I can knit up a storm. I have long since lost count of the number of jumpers I've made (as discussed at June's yesterday - I mean sweaters not pinafores) for both kids and grown-ups. I haven't knitted much lately though and have a few unfinished projects to get round to ...

Now! I can also contribute to the history lesson despite arriving in the mid-1960s. We did not have a washing machine until my brother arrived in 1971 and my mother jacked up at the idea of going through another nappy-period with a copper and a wringer. I have clear memories of getting my More...

Birds can definitely tell the time can't they! I think the proper collective noun for lorikeets is a delegation as in: 'A delegation of lorikeets'

They arrive en masse and they want something from you.

to all. Looks like everyone is enjoying their Easter break.

Keith - glad you are having a great time over there.

GMo - I remember when my dear old grandma had an ice chest - the ice man used to bring a big block in just when the old block had reduced to almost nothing. Amazing that people would earn a living delivering ice.

Thank you for all the people who came to the BBQ and made it such a success. I thoroughly enjoyed my day and the meeting up with both some I had met before and also some new faces. It was a pleasure to be able to show Keith and Lynne some extra sights of Sydney.
There is a photo on my page.

One of my business partners in Australia just sent me this note. Can anyone verify that these numbers are correct?

Good morning all - great photo June, and with Suzy in it.
Ian - I hope someone can answer you on that question, I must admit I haven't heard that, I have never paid anything like that for flathead. But then I rarely buy it, usually I can rely on hubby to catch plenty on his fishing expeditions. More...

Ian, like CynB I cannot find current fish prices, but I am a little suspicious of your friend's report. His last sentence, in particular, is a gross generalisation - just because the price of one fish has risen spectacularly doesn't necessarily mean the the price of ALL fish will rise More...

I am so pleased that so many of you are handing down the joys(maybe not a joy to some) of hand crafts to the next generation. It has inspired me to start thinking about what will be needed here when it eventuall becomes a home again. I may even get the sewing machine out one wet afternoon when the More...

I can't believe that flathead would sell for $55/kg when Tasmanian Salmon fillets are only $29/kg and even some of the reef fish are around that price.

True, Vicki. I just went shopping and checked out fish prices at Woolworths - while they didn't have Flathead, most others ranged from $13 to $29/kg.

Mo - knitting, crochet and sewing skipped a generation in my family from my mother to my daughter. I never had the patience. My Mum was still doing it until her Alzheimers got so bad she couldn't remember how any more. We all have wonderful crocheted rugs that she made. Mine is a Black Watch tartan and is spectacular.

I can sew but don't have the patience for knitting and crochet. I only sew now if necessary- mostly just repairs. I made a lot of clothes for my boys when they were small. When Shaun broke his leg and was in traction, I made him shorts that velcroed up the leg.
My MIL was a wonderful knitter More...

I would have liked to be able to tat, but never knew anyone who did. I remember in primary school the first thing they had us make to try and get our interest. We cut two circles from a cereal packet using pinking shears. A small hole was then cut in the centre and the 2 bits of card placed More...

I had an eventful trip home from work on Thursday. I was in an accident - no injuries to anyone. The other car lost control going up a hill and skidded on the wet road. He did a 360 and was travelling backwards when he just clipped the rear corner of my car. Not too much damage but a real More...

Next came French Knitting - 4 tin tacks in the top of a wooden cotton reelyarn threaded down the centre then round the tacks each time round you lifted the lower yarn over the new yarn and the tack and pulled lightly the thresd down the middle. We made incredibly (or so it seemed) long snakes and then either sewed them into rounds or scarves for our dolls.

Now there's an old word! Tatting!

A line from Cats: And when she gets them lined up on the matting she teaches them music, crocheting and tatting.

GannieMo, I thought you were making a pom-pom there for a minute!

Great minds Vicki! Up a hill?!
French knitting brings back memories too! I still have my 'knitting nancy' doll ... no cotton reels with screws for me!

Oh gosh Kate you were either 'posh' or are very much younger than I - a knitting nancy doll indeed

I started sewing by making dolls clothes and then proceeded to clothes for me. I would make them and then give them to my mother to hand sew the hems. I hate hand sewing. It's even more difficult now as I can't see well enough to thread the needles (even wearing my specs).

We made pom poms too. To put on the ends of the scarves we knitted and the tops of or 'beanie' hats.

I can remember my mother making my brother and myself winter coats. She had bought herself a second hand ,voluminous, full length winter coat. She then used the lower half to make our coats and turned the top into a jacket for herself. Everything was lined and I remember someone commenting hoe=w sweet that we all had matching clothes.

I should really be able to sew as my maternal grandmother was what was called a 'Court Dressmaker' Making bespoke outfits each season for her select clients. When she died there was still a workshop with 6 sewing machines where 'her girls' sewed. My mother alays sewed. Moi, I do like darning, but, More...

I must away for a while. I bought a rotary clothes line for the garden last week and the day before yesterday it collapsed and it only had one load of washing on it, which was nearly dry and had to be washed all over again. So I am taking it back to the store, wish me luck.

Mo - I tell my daughter that's what she's for - putting in zips!

Vicki - glad you came out unscathed from the accident. But, yes, it is a pest to have to get the car repaired.

Kate isn't the Girl Guide supposed to sew on her own badges in order to get her sewing badge?
