You have the Latin word Truncus - a stump or stem. Following on from that truncated, truncheon. It is wonderful to find out how words have evolved...perhaps elephants trunk is used because of them trumpeting? Anyway I had better cut this short...
Nice to see a few familiar faces posting today More...

Trust me to be the one to post the rude ones:
Rubber, meaning eraser in UK and Oz, ia a condom in USA. Fanny, meaning bottom, buttocks, thing you sit on in USA, means "girl bits" (female genitalia) in UK and Oz.

In the old days 'a trunk' could be an oversize wooden suitcase. I think that came before its use for a car-boot. Those trunks were used for long-distance travelling away for some time with a lot of luggage - so it could be related to the word in
'a trunk (long distance) call'.

I think we use both truck and lorry equally these days, Jane.

What is 'a soda' in USA?
17/Jun/09 10:17 PM
 |  |

depends on what part of the country you live in, rayray. In the Midwest, it's "pop"; in the East it's "soda". It's "soft drink" lots of place in the States, and in some parts of the South it's "Coke" (I guess because Coca-Cola was invented there, so it became a generic term for all soft drinks.

Interesting how an ad for "A&W root beer" suddenly appeared above. It looks like certain words trigger these ads.

Then there are the words that are spelled the same but spoken differently. My friend from the UK speaks of the GAY-rage, but here it is the ga-RAGE.
AND in the USA a garage is a place to park your vehicle to keep it out of the yard, but for her, it is a place that sells petrol ( gasoline)

We call a place that sells gasoline a service station, or a filling station.

MizT - Oops! I didn't mean to sound like an expert on southern terminology, being a relative newcomer. I thought "Coke" was pretty much universal in the South when referring to all soft drinks. I didn't realize most southerners said "Coca-Cola". My excuse is that where I live, there are more transplants than natives!!! I learn something new every day!

But MizT, if everyone became a supporting member, Gath would lose his advertising revenue!!!

Vanilla slice: A thick layer of vanilla custard - 2cm or so - between two layers of flaky pastry and topped with vanilla icing (frosting). Yummy!
I prefer not to think about the term some use for them while I'm eating one though. It refers to the discharge from one's nose!
