CynB I don't have an visual memory of the Queen's visit in 1954 I was only 2, but I have a verbal memory passed down from my mother. We were living in Canberra then on the RAAF base at Fairburn, Dad was was in charge of the honour guard greeting her Majesty (ie he was the officer with the sword More...

Morning all.
TV first came to Australia in 1956 just in time for the Melbourne Olympics. We got our first TV then and I remember coming home from school and there it was - with a brick up on the curtain pelmet holding the aerial wire in place! We were very popular and had lots of visitors. It was an exciting time for this 11 year old.

Busy morning here. It's raining in Canberra - makes it lovely for me to have a lazy day. Think I'll head back to bed and read a book.

I was not in 4T's good books this morning - I stumbled out very sleepily at 8am, and he asked would I drive him to school because it was raining. No, said I. Oh but it's raining, said he. You've got a raincoat, an umbrella and perfectly good legs to get you to the bus stop, said I - now, get over it!

Kate - I've been thinking since my last comment that if that had happened these days - you and your mother would have been taken to some obscure location, body searched amd questioned about your links with subversive anti-royal organisations!

CP - they were talking about that on talk-back radio here yesterday. Apparently it's not COOL to be seen wearing a raincoat or using an umbrella even in pouring rain. Obviously, it's less cool even than being seen getting out of your parent's car at school.

Let's see, 56 years ago.... that would be 1952.
My PARENTS weren't even born yet.

*sigh*

Eve - I'll bring my wine glasses to the party. I used to get one at every Art and Wine Festival. At between 6 and 12 each year for more that 20 years, I think I have a lot. Areal pretty one from the Evergreen Festival, it's shades of green.
Fats Domino yes Danced to his music. Chuck Berry No. I knew he existed, but I didn't like his music.

Dorthea sure you can reach the wine glasses (snigger!)
1952 was the year my brother was born so he could not terrorise me for another 4 years until I was born. I actually went to the Melbourne Olympics in my mums belly.

Dorthea - did you know that on one of our shots out into space, the beamed messages & music to who/what ever may here it - among one of the recordings was Chuck Berry. My husband was the space freak. I'm still trying to find homes for 50 years worth of SF. magazines and books. I have some rare ones, otherwise I would just dump them. He was best friends with some of the sF writers. Lots of signed books. My daughters grew up with SF writers and fans. Mostly I did the party cooking.

Angie/Wisc: you should have taken the oldies quiz. You may have won - not with the most right, but with knowing enough of the answers for your tender age. # answers correct times 3 divided by you age - expressed as a percentage. If you are under 30 and can get just 1/2 of them correct you would score over 150% (and there was a bonus question to add even more points.

Elsie, may I suggest putting a swimming hole in your back yard- for the run off to go to. Then when it gets cold enough, you can have a rink on which to skate. If it doesn't get cold enough, when it gets warm enough - a place to paddle around in.

The trouble with that quiz, was that I didn't know the answers to any of them. I guess I'm to old. When I was a teenager I like Ella, the Duck, Earl Father Hinz, The Dorsey Bros. Glen Miller, etc. Later I mostly played with orchestras and opera companies. French Horn players, who also play the bassoon, always have jobs.

Just left Jane's page...the party is slowing down a bit for the night...but they had Jeb dancing with the chickens, so he started sneaking around on the roof to get away and when he got hungry, he tried climbing into the kitchen to get something to eat from the roof.....hope he doesn't fall.... still lots of food and drink for another few days at least....

I wasn't born in 1953 either. My oldest brother was just a baby.
We have a photo of my other brother watching the test pattern on tv when we lived near Lake Macquarie. He was only about 3. Since I came after him, I don't remember a time without tv.

WHERE DO RED-HEADED BABIES COME FROM ?????

Kate from Sydney I don't know why they have withdrawn the YouTube of Faryl singing in the final but I have replaced it on my page with her audition video.
She has a voice that will be tingling our spines for many years to come, and only 12 years old.
