okay another question - does anyone know - as in KNOW, not Google, why tennis players are 'seeded'? Maybe Kathy? No, not the daft one from up north, the tennis-playing one from Fl!

Fiona - Tennis players are seeded so that the top-ranked players don't play against each other in the early rounds of a tournament. The top 4, for instance don't meet up until at least the quarterfinals - usually the semifinals.

okay, but why the word 'seed'????
30/Apr/09 6:09 AM
 |  |

And I'm not daft!!! I actually run a month tennis tournament locally and founded and ran a tennis league of 188 players singlehandedly for 3 years when we first moved here. So there!!!!

I presume that "to seed" a tournament, means to plant the top players in specific sections of the draw. To tell you the truth, I never thought much about it!

would that I call you daft Jane! No, I was talking about the non-mathematical, obviously non-tennis-playing, Kathy, who only wrote pseudo because she couldn't spell pseudonym!!!

Sorry, Fiona. I seem to have gotten caught in the crossfire!

Duck, Jane!
seed - from the notion of "spreading" certain players names so as to insure they will not meet early in a tournament.
Nah, nah, Fiona!

almost thought I'd fired the last shot there!
30/Apr/09 6:25 AM

30/Apr/09 6:25 AM

I'm getting uncomfortable with this talk of "spreading seed" ...

It takes a ho' to plant seeds.

Thanks for being around, Kathy ... so the Evil Fiona could pick on you rather than me! Watch out, USA ... she's COM-ing!

Speaking of Fiona coming to the US, we still haven't set a date for the get-together in Orlando. I'll check with Florida Kathy to see if she has any ideas on a good day. Also, she knows the local restaurants since one of her daughters and family live there. I'll talk with her tonight. I believe More...

I've heard Judy self cultivates....
30/Apr/09 6:48 AM
 |  |

plowing???? another quaint little Americanism??
30/Apr/09 6:48 AM
 |  |

what, I may ask, was wrong with ploughing??
30/Apr/09 6:48 AM
 |  |

Kathy - I can smell the greenhouse gas all the way from Georgia, you old sow-and-sow. (that's sow, pronounced like "so"; not sow pronounced like "cow".) Don't want to get you madder than you already are. hehehehe
30/Apr/09 6:49 AM

it's just bits of Judy that self-cultivate, just bits.

you're getting into the swing of things Jane!
30/Apr/09 6:50 AM
 |  |
That was supposed to be ... Kathy!!!!!!!!! (Spooky!)
30/Apr/09 6:51 AM
 |  |

Fiona - if we spelled it "plough" like you do, we'd probably be pronouncing it like "cough" - or "though" - or "through". Come to think of it, I wonder why we haven't streamlined those words, too!!!
30/Apr/09 6:51 AM
 |  |
Yep, Jane is a swinger ... from a long way back!
30/Apr/09 6:52 AM
 |  |

well, between one bat and another, you'd certainly know.
30/Apr/09 6:53 AM
 |  |
And quit talking about my bits, Fiona!
30/Apr/09 6:54 AM
 |  |

cough = should be "coff"
though = hmmm. we already abbreviate it "tho"
through = same here - our abbreviation is "thru"
30/Apr/09 6:54 AM
 |  |

just as well you didn't do a typo there Judy!
30/Apr/09 6:54 AM
 |  |

Place nice, children!!!
30/Apr/09 6:55 AM
 |  |

Oops! I mean "play" nice!
30/Apr/09 6:55 AM

the story goes that when printing began, the printer bloke was paid by letter, which explains the quantity of letters in some words which are, admittedly rather unnecessary.
30/Apr/09 6:56 AM
 |  |

Yeah, she could have said "tibs". Tsk tsk tsk
30/Apr/09 6:56 AM
 |  |

indeed, would have got her banned immediately which wouldn't have been a bad thing.
