As for collecting things, I have a collection of pasta in the kitchen cupboard, thing is, the kids keep eating it and I need to make regular trips to the only place worse than a kitchen - the supermarket, to stock up.

Jerry, now that you have a Hawaiian coke bottle, you should find one from Maine. On the bottom it says "Open other end."

Jerry.... I would have loved watching those Textile Cones. They are venomous, and efficient hunters. Yes, folks.... we're talking about snails!

Cathy - love the cat comment. If they're really mad at you they want attention and won't let you hold them, just as if to punish you.

Kathy - so happy for you and the progress in your kitchen!

Heidi, During a Captains Inspection of our barracks, the Captain spent a few minutes sitting in the chair in front of the aquarium watching the snail races... He seemed truly interested.

I had a fine collection of Science Fiction Novels, then started collecting Fantasy novels and had to donate the Sci Fi collection to our local library to make room for the growing Fantasy collection. My father collected, and I've inherited his tools. Often I can't find what I want and have to go buy new.

Youlot have been chatty tonight, while Canberra's population has grown by 3 here. Just over an hour until I go home - not a minute too soon I'm exhausted.

That is nice that you collect elephants, Plum. Do you make cheese from elephants, too? You must need to buy very large crackers to serve it on.

I wouldn't want to milk an elephant!

Do elephants have udders? Do you need to use a bar stool to reach? So many questions need to be answered.
Giant crackers for elephant cheese. Would it be a hard cheese or a soft cheese?

They have breasts approximately where we do. They don't have udders like cows, sheep, goats, etc.

I just seem to collect! or should I say hoard?
(There is clothing dating back to 1880's, jewellery, letters, photos back to 1850's, some antique furniture, material that has never been made up etc)

I have material too. I have 2 sewing machines, a rug making kit complete for a 2 x 1 metre rug; Wool, wool and more wool and enough knitting needles and crochet hooks to start a shop. My mother died in 1989 but I still have her paints canvases brushes easels etc., because 'One day.......'

Well, like Keith I have a very large collection of science fiction books, mostly paperbacks, dating back to the 1950's. I also have the largest collection (in my condo building) of dust bunnies. The amazing things is they keep changing shape, so watching them is like lying on a grassy hill and watching clouds roll by...

Watch these, Greg!
Many years ago my son made me a piggy bank in an art class. That started a pig collection that is now a total embarrassment to my children. Too bad. I also have many small-ish lanterns all over the place. On the More...

Kathy, I think that women are particularly vulnerable to amassing collections they don't necessarily want. For example, on receiving a gift of a porcelain elephant (dolphin, frog, Hummel, "collector" spoon), the lady politely exclaims "Oh, I love elephants!" Sons, nephews, More...

Greg, I didn't realise you were such an avid collector of dust bunnies. Send me your postal address and I will mail you some French ones to add to your collection. They are very affectionate and like to huddle together. I'm sure they will mix with yours very well.

My SIL is beginning to regret the habit of sending greetings cards with apes on them. We all, her family, find ourselves scouring the countryside for cards bearing anything simian as her birthday approaches.

It is after midnight, it is pouring rain outside, and inside 2 upper rooms. The cat has come in looking like he's had a bath. I am going to head up the wooden hill to bedfordshire. Sleep tight children, everywhere. Goodnight.

I have a question for any here who might be dealing with nursing homes.

Is it unusual for those places to distribute email to their patients? It seems to me that, if they were printed out and left with the patient, in more lucid moments (for patients with dementia), they might be able to get great pleasure from them, even if momentary, before the darkness descends again.

11/Jun/09 8:33 AM
 |  |

And expanding just a bit...teenage grandchildren, distant nephews and nieces, maybe those who just can't handle the atmosphere in those places...might be very willing to shoot a quick email to that patient, care of a central distribution point at the nursing home, with general chat about everything and nothing.

regarding nursing home - we could email her at one place - they would print out the messages and bring them to her each day -

At her last place - they had an computer, but my Mom was unwilling to learn to use it - they offered help and some folks used it for email
