Andre with no available accent.
I have always thought that Yes Minister/Yes Prime Minister was the best and most influential show on TV. As a humble functionary it was so close to the truth, that the satire was savage. It has also introduced more sayings into English than any other show I can More...

And before I go and return to work here is a joke.
Frank and his wife Esther went to the state fair every year, and every year Frank would say: "Esther, I'd like to ride in that helicopter."
Esther always replied: "I know Frank, but that helicopter ride is 50 dollars, and 50 More...

Do we have much of satire in the USA? Saturday Night Live would be one, I suppose. And maybe sitcoms like "Seinfeld," "30Rock," "Third Rock from the Sun" might be possibilities.

André, from an oldster and a colonial, I have to refer you back to the late '60's and early 70's. Monty Python's Flying Circus shaped the future of sitcoms in Britain and Canada for years to come. A message is on your page.

Hi Greg
Monty Python was preceded by "At Last the 1948 Show" in 1967 hosted by David Frost, in which most of the stars/creators of MP were featured. It also had Marty Feldman who crossed over to Hollywood but unfortunately is no longer with us. My main memory was of the lovely but useless Aimi McDonald.

How about "That Was The Week That Was"
The UK version was much better than the American version (no surprise there!) It aired in the UK in the early 60's. VERY good satire! I am so thankful that our PBS stations air British TV shows! Absolutely nothing better than British comedies.

Whoa, another smaller jolt today. Didn't really feel the shaking too much but heard a tinkling sound of something moving. Thought it was the lizard my darling students chased into my cupboards. Argh. Earthquakes, lizards, and the occasional scorpions. What else will come into my room besides the smelly little darlings I call my students!

Andre - my new computer doesn't want to do the accent!- I have a memory of my parents roaring with laughter in the mid-60's watching a British comedy show that had David Frost, Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. There was a ditty about a village "Muchbinding in the Marsh".

Don't know how many Aussie shows made it to Britain - Mavis Brampton Show, My Name's McGoolie - What's Yours?, Paul Hogan Show. Loved Some Mother's Do 'Ave 'Em.

I've always considered Presidential news conferences to be the best political satire on the telly.

I remember watching Canadian TV comedy shows broadcast from Windsor, Ontario. One skit I remember was "the Scarlet Pumpernickle" with a sound that my family adopted and used from time to time: "ecky-thump"

Don't forget Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" and, also, the "Colbert Report," Glinda! And "The Simpsons," "South Park." Of course, "All in the Family" was the beginning. Good stuff, good stuff!

Ian
Presidential news conferences are much like Yes Minister only one's real (unfortunately) and the other is imaginary.

When you think about it, some of the skits in Laugh-In, the Sonny & Cher Show and Carol Burnett were quite satirical. It's just that they were mixed in with a lot of stuff that was not. Get Smart was also satirical. I suppose there were other shows we never saw in Australia.
