Having built a few things I've always wanted to visit Jordan primarily to see these structures in Petra which were actually carved from the sandstone, rather than constructed from the ground up.

Judy, I wasn't aware of their religious signifigance...will look it up.

Eric, while you're at it, go to the southwestern states where the Anasazi carved homes and communities on the sides of mountains the plateaus. They have a great stone structure to pin point the summer soltice. Incredible for "Ancients"!

It's "The Khazneh" the best known of the monuments at Petra. Khazneh means 'treasury' and probably came from the ledgend that it was used to hide treasure. Actually, it was probably a temple or tomb. There is just one large plain room inside. It is as well preserved as it is because of it's location. It's well protected from the elements.
