How's that for timing!

Looking to be another scorcher today.
It is still just cooler outside than inside so almost time to shut windows and pull the blinds.
Best go fill the bird baths... they dry out quickly in this weather. Yesterday I watched a bird just 'sitting' in it... not splashing, drinking etc... just trying to cool down.

Well done Hal
Thanks for stopping me going for a CP, a BOPP or a TOPP...

Ignore the next rant... a bit grumpy today
I've only had 3 hours sleep ... my hip and knee has reached its used by date and the pain has kept me awake most the night so guess my plans for today... have a soak in the bath and then go back to bed. I can't drive when it is like this so it is good I'd planned a quiet lunch with my son.

When I was in the supermarket last night... shopping was the final straw that broke the camels back I think... they were selling large cooked chooks at over 80% off ($2.20) and salads at 1/2 price... I might leave turning the oven on until tomorrow. Chicken, champagne and salads sounds good to me. Followed up with pudding & custard... and chocolates ....

Have a wonderful day everyone.
Thinking of you all as we share in the delights of another Festive Season.
Be safe those of you that are on the roads.

Well here downunder it is the 25th of December. So a very Merry Christmas to one and all.

If I'm not mistaken, it's Christmas now for some top-siders also. Like the Philippines.

Hal has moved the Philippines! Clever, but they are no longer part of the US, Hal...

It's Ok. It is Christmas day on Guam.

Sarah, the last time I looked, the Philippines were north of the equator, i. e., topsiders.

Merry Christmas to all!

Well it is surely Christmas time here with phone greetings coming in from all over the place.

I have found it confusing that people refer to topsiders and bottomsiders. It works okay for the US and Canada vs New Zealanders and Aussies, but as the sun moves from the east to the west, Easterner and Westerner would make more sense. I know that traditions are hard to break, but perhaps we could make a New Year resolution to avaid confusion.

Merry Christmas.

Our landline has been prematurely deceased for a while. Several days ago, a repairman showed up, fiddled around, failed to get the phone working, and disconnected our WiFi (which we get through the phone line), so I'm down at the local coffee shop to get on the Internet. No More...

I find it amusing that some people want to restrict 'downunder' to NZ and AU. And 'topsiders' to the US, CA, and parts of Europe. I'm with Wombat.

Well then Hal, could you and I start a trend. The very best of Christmas wishes to a very special Westerner.
The east coasters of North America might object.

Merry Christmas to one and all.

Christmas dinner here will be very late as some family members are working today.

Australia has always been referred to as 'Downunder'. At least since as far back as when Hal was a boy.
25/Dec/15 11:42 AM

The north (Topsiders) and we from the south (Downunder (Better include the Kiwis)) have a defined separation line....the equator.

Wombat/Hal what do you consider to be the east/west dividing line......The international date line or the Greenwich meridian or any other longitudinal line - pick one.

Oooooh! I can see it from here.

The IDL, Peter. It used to irritate me that some little island in the Pacific got to welcome the new year first. But I got over that many (many, many) years ago.
And yes, downunder was the Aussies and the Kiwis. But since my days in the AF, and learning all that lat/long stuff, I've matured.

Anyway... Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Yes Hal, a Merry Christmas to you and your family, too.

Saw on the news that there has been a shooting in Charlotte......take care, mate!
25/Dec/15 12:59 PM
 |  |

Yeah, another shooting. If it had happened anywhere other than a crowded mall on the day before Christmas, you would have never heard about it. Pity.

In fact you need two dividing lines since you are dealing with a spherical object, so the logical choice would be Greenwich and the IDL. The equator goes right around the world but Greenwich and the IDL only go half way each (pole to pole).

Downunder or the antipodes was okay for Europe vs NZ and Aussie and for seasonal comparisons, but not for daily comparisons.

Thank you to all Mother Christmas's everywhere.

They are the ones who do most of the work.
25/Dec/15 6:13 PM
 |  |

So, according to Hal and Wombat, Aussie, NZ and Europe are now Easterners and the UK, Canada and US are Westerners.......have I got that right?
25/Dec/15 6:28 PM
 |  |

To all the Topsiders. Yep you read it right Topsiders. Those that are a day late and a Dollar short may you enjoy the day.
