I have a terrific dilemma . Will I be Grandma, Nanna, Granny, - all suggestions will be greatfully received. No rush, I have till the beginning of November to work it out

Got to go and have a splint put on my finger this morning.

Not looking forward to six weeks of that.

Wonderful news Margo. Think that decision is for your bundle of joy.
K, gave Grandpa a new name, Pappoo. None of us have ever heard that name before, K started calling him that.
And M, calls Grandma, to everyone else, Bammaw.

Good morrow all,
Super slow friday morning start in the office, but I'm certain as soon as I've submitted this I'll be bombarded with work. Bring it on!
The weather is lovely though, nice and cold. Perfect mood to snuggle in.

Margo, you are going to be a grandmother. Not a Nanna, not a Meemaw, not any one of a dozen or more names that children can come up with. So, I suggest you do what I did. Decide what you want to be called and insist on it.
End of rant.

Karen, that is what I was talking about. I would have not liked to be called a 'Pappoo.'
When our youngest was learning to talk, she called a hamberger, 'huggaboo.' Cute, but we corrected her until she got it right.

When our oldest grandson was told he had a great-grandma, he called her 'big-grandma.' My mother was not pleased.

Gz, Grandparents? I feel like I'm at a family gathering and everyone is chatting about things I'm still to young to understand. Like nappy rash and taxes.

We called my grandparents Amah and Daddad, I didn't even know my grandfather's real name until I was about fifteen. Both of those names sound nothing like their real names, it just came about because the eldest grandchild couldn't say anything else. Now everyone in the family calls them by those name as if it's written on their birth certificates.

Hal, you really are a pernickety old man. I can think of many more names to call you!
03/May/13 10:36 AM
 |  |

And I wouldn't accept any of them, Peter.
03/May/13 10:40 AM
 |  |

I think you just comfirmed my argument, Izzy.
03/May/13 10:43 AM
 |  |

So, Hal, what did you INSIST your grandchildren call you? And just out of curiosity, did Barbara INSIST on what she wanted them to call her? I can't speak for male grandparents, but I think most grandmothers love it when a grandchild can finally say any kind of word which refers to them specifically. And, as Izzy said, often that chosen word sticks!
03/May/13 11:02 AM
 |  |

Grandpa or granddad, Kathy. As it turned out, they all call me 'Grandpa.'

And the chosen word will only stick if the 'adults?' allow it to stick.
03/May/13 11:09 AM
 |  |
Well I mean, at least in australia if a nickname annoys someone slightly then it's most defiantly going to stick. If you want a nickname to go away then the best way I know how is to allow it to run it's course.
03/May/13 11:13 AM
 |  |

Get back to me when you're a grandparent, Izzy.
03/May/13 11:23 AM
 |  |

That one doesn't always work, Izzy. No_one in my family is called by their real name and never have been as long as I can remember. The origins of our nick names are all lost in history. Going with it or fighting it would have made no difference.
03/May/13 11:39 AM
 |  |
HalT that might be another half a century before I get back to you.

Sacky, I don't know, I mean the only reason one of my friends is called Polar Bear (apart from looking remarkably like one when emerging from the water) is because he fought the nickname when it was first suggested.

Hal, in Oz Nanna is almost as popular - or maybe even more so - than Grandma.
03/May/13 11:48 AM
 |  |

Missing comma after Oz, sorry.
03/May/13 11:49 AM
 |  |

Personally, I am Grammy, and love the name.
03/May/13 11:50 AM
 |  |

I did not want to be Nana, as both my mum and grandmother were.
03/May/13 11:50 AM
 |  |

And that worked out well as my son-in-law's mother wanted to be Nanna.

Everybody. Another beautiful 'solar powered' day here in NE Ohio. I loved it. Thanks, Serena, for suggesting how uplifting the sun is to most of us. I definitely have more energy on sunny days than the dark and gloomy or stormy days!

Mr. Cee - I enjoyed all your jokes on yesterday's page.

OK, I give up. You all can let your grandchildren name you. I just hope they all don't come up with different names.

(Dang, my smilies aren't working.)

Hey, I didn't know you can type in the code for smilies. Let's see: [thanks] [stickitinyourear]

In our case, the girls are such miracles for the whole family, that whatever they named their grandparents, they would accept it. Don't get me wrong, all babies are wonderful miracles, it just took us a while to figure out the recipe.
Anyway, Bammaw, did not like her name, but has never corrected M. And Pappoo, was thrilled with his name, since the girl was his shadow.

I do like this extended cold weather, when I have heat.
We do have heat, in the bedroom and did have two heaters, well we did, until one went over to our buyers place. A jacket or sweater would be nice, if they were not packed and in storage.
No worries, two days of this, and we be back to 80 degrees with humidity.

I am hoping this trend contineous, because it is cold on Wednesdays and Thursday and starts warming up late on Fridays. Been this way for at least 4 weeks. If keeps up like this, it will mean field trip will have to be canceled.

Then again, on the other side of the family we had an enforced 'Pop' and 'Nana' But I know them both by their middle names, being a late teenager before any other grandkids came along for them.
03/May/13 12:47 PM
 |  |
I have come to the conclusion that both are possible
