You are right Bert, and THAT is the main reason both you and I don't do a lot here any more

Appy I am sorry that you have seen this as a racist attack. I agree with the comments by the police that it is more likely the attacks are opportunistic - not racially motivated. Do not take any notice of Mr. Baillieu's comments...that is no more or no less than I would expect from an opposition More...

appy you must take into consideration exactly what area of town this happened and at what hour. When visiting Jakarta some years ago during a period of riots against the corrupt government there were stories about tourists being caught up in violent clashes and it turned out that they were in an More...

And considering the publication, I would believe that this could quite easily be warped towards the negative. I would suggest that if Appy does decide to visit us here in Australia, she should avoid at all costs, parties with gatecrashers!

No,I have not seen it as racist attack, just like that.. but it is indeed, may be the attacks are a mix of opportunistic and racist. There is no point in trying to cover it up I feel.Any sane person who analyze things logically will clearly see what it is. I am not blaming or pointing fingers at any More...

Hi all. I have to confess that the pic was taken in my garden. Lucy (of chocolate cake making fame) and I had been trimming the lavender and we set up this pic. I very rarely set up a pic. I prefer to capture what is already there. So Gail, you are quite right.

Appy, I would like to support Bean's comments about Indian students and railways and crime in Melbourne. There are parts of Delhi and Mumbai that I would not visit at night, but that does not make India a racist nation.

Feeling a bit more human for a few minutes but as the garden thermometer is registering 35° C I shall stick to photographing my newest blooms in the rose garden. There will be another three on my Flickr in a few minutes

Anyway, racist or not,I think the student community from India must be called back I feel to save them from further attacks. For the solution to this problem lies in the hands of Govt of Australia, and the general mind set of the people must change, which I doubt will happen, as they hardly accept the fact that there exist a problem at all!!

Unfortunately aasaults against Asian in London are only too common. Some thugs, under the 'instructioins of the media', single out those who they think are Moslems - and it is easier for 'the poor dears' to make all 'brown' people targets. To some police even South-Americans (e.g. the More...

Hi all

As the builders, electricians, plumbers, roofers et al., have yet to start we have a semi uninhabitable property in the middle of what is becoming a pleasant place to sit and contemplate. This will prove our sanctuary, as long as the weather is good. Being between a building site and a camper van is not good when it is either cold or wet and windy.

Appy - we have a very large Indian community in my local area, or at least a large community with Indian heritage (they've lived in Australia for decades). I like to believe the attacks are by a nasty minority; that most Aussies are as horrified as you are.

It can work the other way too. My son is 6 feet 4 inches tall with blond hair. He is married to a Malaysian moslem(and has been for 15 years or so) When they were first together they rarely went anywhere on their own in S E Asia without a chaperone or friends and it wasn't just for propriety's More...

So far, I feel the most racist statements have been uttered by Appy. The problem is that someone got beaten up. Bad thing, but make no more of it than it is!

Appy, there are racists in Australia as in every country, but that doesn't make Australians a racist people. Yes, there have been attacks on Indian students - and on others as well. Those who carry out these attacks are not typical of this country and the police are working really hard to arrest More...

The intolerance in our society is appalling... and I don't just mean Australia.

Appy I think you are mistaken if you think there is a 'general mindset' over here that is bigoted and racist and doesn't accept that there is a problem. The general populace is disgusted and horrified by More...

We do seem to have several cats in the pigeon loft this week. Perhaps we should all return to the places of our ethnic origin and then close all borders. Should I go to England or Scotland. Perhaps it should only apply to people not born where they reside.

It is generally the underprivileged people in a country who perpetrate these crimes against foreigners - or those they perceive to be outsiders. In some cases, they act out of jealousy but usually fear of displacement. In the US, back in the 60s, most crimes against blacks were committed by More...

Furthermore, I understand there is still a fairly large amount of caste-related violence in India despite the advances being made in ending the caste system. So I guess the victims of any violent crime can be defined similarly: those who are deemed "inferior" or threatening by another group of individuals.
