G'day mates, here's today's daffynition:
Infantry n. The kid's room.

...And here's today's factoid:
Leonardo da Vinci painted only 17 paintings - and some of them were unfinished.

Good morning. My grandchildren - ages 5 and 7 = just went home after a wonderful 5 day visit. Grandma and Grandpa are tired, but happy. We cherish every moment as they are growing up so fast.

Good Morning from hot and sunny Central Kentucky. I'm still alive and off to get more supplies for the fencing project. I need more barbed 2'' staples, some 17 gauge wire, a LOT of concrete and some work gloves.

I'm surprised that Da Vinci painted that many paintings, Kayo. I thought he primarily sketched, sculpted and invented.

Heidi, you put me to shame.
Hope you finish your fence in time, with time to spare.

Why do I put you to shame, Karen? You are a wonderful mother whose daughters know that they are loved. That's a far bigger thing than I have ever accomplished.

everybody. I know just how you feel, Linda. We have had revolving visitors here with us for the past two weeks. First to arrive were our daughter & SIL's two BIG dogs whom we dogsat while they went to Mexico on their second honeymoon (first was just 6 months ago!). Second More...

I have only had time to scan comments on Easy occasionally. Has anyone (particularly Jerry?) heard how Eve is doing? I have been thinking about her & hope she is doing well after her surgery.

The fence WILL be finished with time to spare. I have a helper now and 3 days to go. I use concrete that sets in 20 minutes (and the helper lifts all the bags of concrete). That'll be done today. Tomorrow We'll staple the panels to the posts and wire the panels together. Any stapling that needs More...

Heidi, thanks for you kind words.
But you are amazing, working out in the heat, lifting very heavy items and still going. I break a sweat, and I am back in the air conditioning, in a heart beat. And I grunt when I have to pick up the 30 and 40 pound girls.

Kathy... The new mare is a Gypsy Vanner. This picture is of her! Because of the heat this summer, we've been having trouble getting her bred. We gave it one last try 2 days ago, and if this didn't take, we're going to hold off trying again until More...

I'm putzing around on the 'pooter right now because my hired hand hasn't shown up for work yet. I'll give him an hour more, then I'll just have to do everything myself. I dread having to lift the bags of concrete, though. Too hard on my poor back. There's no safe way to lift them that I've found.
31/Jul/12 1:29 AM

I hope he shows up, Heidi. I racked up my back trying to lift bags of mulch last week. I won't do it again!

I buy 50 lb bags, but still lifting 86 (all that the store has in stock) of them today would probably come close to killing me.

Here's today's poozle:

This is considered by some to be the ultimate tool. It was quickly adopted for a specific military application when originally introduced. It is known for its superior bonding, is heat resistant, and is extremely strong. NASA thinks so highly of this, it is More...

The Olympics people will NEVER admit that SOMEONE came up with a neat LOGO -- and THEN they had to come up with an EXPLANATION. 'Five continents', indeed!
31/Jul/12 2:17 AM

A little research....

''Despite popular misconceptions there is no link between the ring colors and a continent, the colors simply came from those colors that appeared on all the national flags of the world at that time. The five-ringed symbol 'represents the union of the five continents More...

Quote (from several sources): 'Tug of war was contested as a team event in the Summer Olympics at every Olympiad from 1900 to 1920.'

It's a nice logo, and nice symbolism. But there are SIX inhabited continents. It is hard to believe that whoever concocted the logo did not realize this.
Logo came first, then and effort (yeah, right) to explain it.

Good mAen, good people. Notice that Kathy says only that I attempted the Olympics poozle, not that I answered them all correctly.

lonewoof - I didn't google the answer to number 3, so your mention of Olympic tug of war makes Kathy's answer wrong. I just googled the others and find that my answer of roller hockey was correct! The others were - at least for one Olympiad - actual Olympic events. Roller hockey was a More...

I was puzzled about the five rings, too. (I can count continents.) I knew from long time ago that the rings represented the continents somehow, but wanted to find out why there were 5 not 6. Turns out the guy who designed the Olympic flag was studying old Greek symbols on pottery etc. and came More...

Faun has another week of detasseling seed corn. Hopefully next Monday will be her last day. Meanwhile Little Plum has caught a summer cold (topped with a sunburn from a day in the water) and we're trying to keep her from getting Faun sick so she can finish out the season!

I guess I'll throw another comment in before I go straighten up and try to figure out what to make for supper tonight. That will put us at the bottom and make it easy for the next person to have the thrill of vaulting us to the top of p. 2!

We gave up for the day. It's way too hot to set posts in concrete. We only got about 20 of them done and that nearly killed us. We'll be lucky to get the job done by Thursday. I did insist that we start work early tomorrow before the heat sets in. It might help.
