4:39 That scenic route scared the heck out of me when we did it with snow on the road - from memory it is mostly single lane with no guard rails to keep you from going over the edge!

9:32 Why is it that the roads that most need guardrails never have them? I wouldn't want to get a flat tire out there. But it is a beautiful sight.

Rose: The drive into and out of Queenstown is just gorgeous. Is that the road out of Queenstown that hss the sign saying 'Rental Cars Prohibited'? The road I'm dying to try is Gentle Annie, West of Hastings on the North Island. We took a look at it but decided our little hired Nissan just wasn't up to the task.

It reminds me a little of some of the roads through the Welsh hills, but the countryside there is a vivid green. I was too busy keeping the car on the road to even think of taking a photo.

This photo brought back memories. Spent the first 6 weeks of 2005 driving around New Zealand.

This scene is so beautiful it makes me wonder why we (most of us) have to drive as fast as we can to get from A to B and can't just take it real easy and enjoy the surroundings that are a big part of our life. All this global warming is going to make a lot of this change. Why can't we just enjoy it.

Hi Rosemary! I wanted to let you know that the house puzzle picture from Thursday makes a great jigsaw for young kids. Leia, who is not quite 5, ploughed through it without any help and was very pleased with herself.

Beautiful picture! Someone send some of that global warming my way (kidding, folks). The snow, wind and freezing temps around here feel more like another ice age.

To Jeb from KS - the Gentle Annie isn't as bad as it looks. The one road that really scares the socks off me is the Skippers Canyon in the South Island of NZ. Now that's a truly scary place with not enough room to pass by another car.

we stopped in a roadside park area and when I got out of the car to take the photo I was nearly blown over with the wind. the outside temperature was the coldest of our entire journey at just 4C.

Give me a scenery photo anyday. That comment on the tough site about this being a virtual travel guide is indeed true. Gotta let Gath and the travellers who submit their photos know how much I appreciate them. thanks

Rosemary - sounds like you had a good holiday. Getting 'off the beaten track' is the only way to really see a country.

5:20. While I spent five years in NZ I didn't ever get over near Queenstown so haven't been on this road. From what I remember (I left NZ 30 years ago, so the memories are a bit distant) the road between Nelson and Picton, which I travelled by bus on numerous occasions, wasn't exactly a picnic back then either.
