Greg,Trees look like Crepe Myrtles (Lythraceae).Indigenous to Burma. Grown extensively in and around Sydney. Many shades from pink to mauve and some whites. Flower in Autumn, diciduous, great autumn coloured leaves.

I have several crepe myrtles in my yard here in Maryland. I planted dwarf crepe myrtles around the front porch. Both have lovely flowers. They have been flowering spring, summer and this fall.
