Not a Parrot or Parakeet, but very colorful. What size are these birds? They look about the size of parakeets. Where are these birds native?

A squark?? Is that the sound a bunch of them makes?

I saw these in person at Sea World in San Antonio, TX. You could buy a little cup of seeds to feed them too. They are really pretty with all of those colors. My 4 year old boy calls them "rainbow" birds!

Native to Australia. Should NOT be given seed to eat. They are nectar and fruit eaters and have a "furry" tongue to collect the nectar. Very cheeky and even the wild ones will land on your hand to feed.

June - Thanks for the info. I wonder why a place like Sea World would be giving them the wrong thing to eat? They are usually really good at making the animals captive lives as natural as possible. Maybe it is my memory that is wrong... that would make more sense!!

Also known as "rainbow lorikeets", so your 4 year old was correct, Terri!

Hi All, It's nice to be welcomed back with one of my photos. The Rainbow Lorikeets are found over most of eastern Australia. They are quite common and very noisy. These were photographed during our visit to Lake Macquarie (an hour or so drive north of Sydney) last year. The word 'squark' refers to the noise they make and believe me, it's a fairly accurate description.

Sea World, San Diego, provides only cups of nectar for the lorikeets. Me thinks you had a brain freeze, Terri! :)

Lovely photo Ian. Don't we just have some of the best birds in the world!
I watched a kurrawong playing with a tennis ball in my garden on the weekend. Unfortunately by the time I found my camera he'd flown off.

We feed the rainbow lorikeets in our back yard. We have set up a feeder and make a bread mash with sugar and water. They suck the sugar out of the bread and drop in onto the ground. The hardest part is keeping the crows away from the feeder as they chase all the other birds.

You can buy special Lorikeet food in the supermarkets in Sydney to serve the same way - you don't need to use sugar or honey which they like but is nutritionally dubious, certainly if they come to rely on it as anything other than an occasional treat. Welcome back Ian! The Bronte brunch is still on on 21st October!

They are native to eastern Australia but now are found thriving in Western Australia. I have heard two theories on how they got over here:
1. A misguided nature lover freed them from a licensed owner's aviary in Mosman Park (couldn't bear to see them caged).
2. A fierce storm freed them by More...
