Great texture! Is it a wood that you can make into bowls, I wonder?

The melaleuca (in Florida), like the eucalyptus (in California), was brought in from Australia to perform a specific function. Windbreak (eucalyptus), or to drain low-lying areas in the case of Melaleuca on Lake Okeechobee, notorious for spilling over during hurricanes and devastating populated areas. Now regarded as 'invasive,' there's a huge, ugly, expensive eradication program under way.

My first thought was a Van Gogh painting. Nice picture.

We welcome the eucalyptus in Southern California because of their beauty and rapid growth ... but, boy, are they ever messy ... and when rain and wind come together, as they do 2 or 3 times a year, the trees topple like dominoes!

Thanks for the info - Melaleuca have become "invasive" here in FL - also - bad pollen for allergies! MAEN everyone!

I don't think I have ever seen a tree like this. Thanks for all the info. Are they good for anything besides a "windbreak?" Do they "root" very deep?
