Now that's an interesting photo! Looks like a fossil squid (though the soft tissue involved would make that next to impossible).

11:23 Maen! Kate, I was thinking the same thing -- either a squid or a jellyfish! :)

Nothing hurts more than strolling the soft sands of a South Pacific beach and stubbing your toe on the lava or coral concealed beneath the surface!

15:50 to you all.

What possessed me into thinking that picture would be a fun jigsaw? And um, no, Dan, no cow patty, but thanks for putting the vision in my head.

Soft tissue is possible to fossilize if the right conditions are met. I don't what they are but I have read something somewhere about that. Somebody smart enlighten us. Good mAen!

Sue, you have an eye for the unusual - and the ability to take a good photo of it! Pity (or not) that it didn't appear as a Hard Jigsaw. Great photo. Was it taken with mischief in mind?

I agree! Looks like a hard jigsaw!
It lends itself to many descriptions, doesn't it!
I vote for cow patty.

Great photo, thanks Sue. Ian you can do it as a hard puzzle if you want to! I had the same thought as you HalT!

16:10 - it looks like it's been laid by a prehistoric cow and petrified. Great minds think alike HalT and Kate!

Cathy,

Fossilize isn't the same as petrified. Soft tissue can be preserved frozen (arctic mammoths etc.), encased in amber (esp. insects, but also blood and soft tissue) or dessication (natural mummies like dinosaur bones found with flexible tissue still inside the bone). When soft tissue is replaced or saturated with stone, it's petrified. maEn
