What a fantastic project Peter. Using the stump, if that is what it is, is a great idea. You will have something beautiful and unique when it is complete.
I'm not sure if there are variations of red gum, but I think the most common form, the river red gum (eucalyptus camaldulensis) is limited to the mainland.

Is this a cross-cut of a burl or of a larger Eucalyptus tree's trunk? I see a metal plate on the base, how will you attach the top?
