WEST SUMATRAN BRIDE. RECENT PEOPLE-PICTURE

A bride at a traditional wedding in Padang in West Sumatra, Indonesia. She doesn't look too happy - perhaps because of the weight of her metal head-gear. Her costume is traditional and authentic, being over 100 years old. Gail requested this picture.

That is spectacular.
A little OTT for my tastes but certainly eye-catching, if not a little neck-straining!

Yes your right, she doesnt look to eager to get on with the day. Perhaps it was at the end and the weight gave her a head ache...

Oh the price of vanity, the headache from the weight of that headdress! But the photography is great!

Stunning picture and bride. Such a contrast: the absolutely glowing wedding gear and the unhappy bride.

Beautiful photograph. You captured a feeling that couldn't possibly be expressed in words. One wonders if the marriage turned out happily.

Jane:
It wasn't marriage that stopped her from smiling. It was the three days of noisy, exhausting celebrations, at almost 100degreesF with high humidity while wearing a heavy costume that took hours for people to put her into each day!

Wow! I'm thinking this bride must be from a wealthy family! Are all weddings this elaborate?

Kathy: Weddings and Funerals are taken seriously, and people force themselves to afford as much as possible over them. Most families have low incomes (maybe in 2000 about US$30 per month and with very high unemployment through poorly developed economic strategy) - and, although prices are low, there is much hardship. This wedding was a little different because the bride's family have a business of hiring festive costumes - so the clothes here are more elaborate and traditional than usual, and that cost is eliminated for them.
