DOUBLE BIRTHDAY PARTY; West Sumatra 1999

Me to the right in hired, early-19th-century real Sumatran Sultan's gear. The little girl - the youngest of my 'Sumatran surrogate family' in party fancy dress. We each have a birthday cake; our birthdays co-incided; I was 59; she was 4. There were about 40 guests from the village. The left-side lady is the little girl's mum and my friend's sister. I personally financed this party and it was good value for money!

I look a little jaded because it was 100 degrees F with the relative humidity hovering around 95%; and, the Sultan's gear would have kept an Eskimo warm at the North Pole in an Arctic winter

Even as a wilted lily, you still look resplendent in your sultan's gear! Mind if I join you? That chocolate cake looks scrumptious!

Shosho:
Made by a Chinese family, specialising in celebration cakes made to order from photos in a shapshot album, that Black Forest Gateau was THE most delicious cake I've ever eaten - and the whole cake only cost about 5 Oz dollars

Rayray - I agree with Shosho...you hold up well in all that heat - I would have not been able to take it. LOVE your Sultan's suit - beautiful!
What a joy to share your birthday with that sweet girl. I, too, want a piece of that Black Forest Gateau - YUM!

One more in agreement here. Even wilted in your somewhat self-imposed sauna, you are still a handsome man.
That looks like a wonderful party, both for you and that adorable little 4 yr. old angel.
Is fancy dress the norm for birthday parties there, or was this an inspiration of your own? Either way, it's a wonderful idea that adds excitement to the festivities.
That cake sounds delicious.

Must say that the outfit suits you to a T. Thanks for sharing it with us. I love all the decorations and it seems that the little girl received a lot of presents. Her dress resembles what I wore for my first communion. Children today do not dress like that anymore, at least not in Ottawa and not at my church. At St. Antony's church, the little italian girl still wear white dresses with veil for their first communion.

Heidi:
'Fancy Dress' (or 'ceremonial costumes') are not usual there for birthdays. However the family of the bride (shown in the other wedding photo) run a business of hiring out real antique ceremonial costumes, and as we are/were on good terms with them, we decided (jointly) it would be a good ploy to enliven the party with a bit of their fancy dress (along with the birthday cakes complete with candles). It took me about 4 gale-like blows to extinguish my 59 candles; whilst the little girl took about 59 puffs to snuff out her 4 candles!!
