everyone!
Happy to hear you are safe and sound, Tom!
Arachnid, I guess the simplest way to describe a city block is a group of buildings enclosed by streets. The size can vary and I believe that they are always rectangular.
Sarah is our city girl, I'm sure she can give a more complete explanation, but those are the basics, I think.

Good mAen, good people. I didn’t mean to be cryptic. Yes, I was referring to Judy. I guess I missed she had already passed. Last update I read was that she was in a nursing home. I’ve been too distracted by offline stuff to keep up with the online. Sorry I put people into a dither. Rob, my belated condolences.

RIP Linda. Linda graciously hosted my husband and I overnight back in 2019. She shared her homemade wine and cooked up a delicious dinner and dessert. She took us to a wine tasting and also photographed one of my personal “bucket list” moments: She took us to where I could touch the Mississippi River and took a photo of me with my hand in the famous flow.

Sudoku people are good people.

I have a photo of Linda in my photo gallery, it's the 112 pic. Also there is some other photos of that gathering of ours in 2009, including photos of Ouima, Mamacita and Rob.

Thank you Sarah and Kathy for your explanations. I guess originating from a country that didn’t have blocks the term was always something of conundrum for me. I think modern city planning may be in the block style but not the old towns where I was raised

Even old city planning can be in block style. In Manhattan and in DC, there are old curvy or slanting streets that were oxcart trails or whatever, but the old planned city areas are more organized. The same is true in other cities, where especially downtown areas are laid out with rectangular blocks (as in Kathy's answer) defined by streets at right angles. Washington DC's streets were laid out in the early 1800's, not exactly recently: 'The L'Enfant Plan for the city of Washington is the urban plan developed in 1791.' (Wikipedia) L'Enfant made life interesting by including wide avenues that go at angles, cutting across the square blocks, creating circles to handle corners where several streets would otherwise intersect at pie-cutting angles. New York has fewer of those, and handles them mostly with squares like Times Square. I mention DC and New York because they are familiar, but most US cities have recognizable notions of how to lay out streets in rectangles defined by streets at right angles.
