Key Deer in Key Deer National Wildlife Refuge

The Key Deer is a subspecies of the Virginia White-tailed Deer. Like many large animals marooned on islands, they have adapted by growing smaller. On Big Piney Key, the USA has protected the habitat of this unique animal, of which only a thousand or so (up from around 200) are alive. This fully-grown animal was about three feet at the shoulder.
